Rabindranath Tagore -My Poet

It is said that love leads to creation of beautiful things and one of the most
enchanting creation is poetry. Among thousands of Poet, the one that never fails to amuse me is
Rabindranath Tagore. His use of simple language, be it in poetry or short stories, gets one
hooked and ends up making one an admirer of his work. I, for one have been a fan of his work
since 2007.
Rabindranath Tagore was born into a Bengali family in Kolkata in the year May 7th, 1861 and
died on August 7th, 1941. He is a renowned Bengali poet, short story writer, song composer,
playwright, essayist and painter who introduced new prose and verse forms. He used colloquial
language into Bengali literature. He is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of
early 20th century India and became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for
literature in 1913.
Although Tagore wrote in various genre but my focus will be on his poems. In the year 1878, he
published his first poem titled ‘Kabi- Kahini’ (the tale of the poet), followed by ‘Bana-Phul’ (the
flower of the words) in 1880 and so on. His last poem was titled ‘Shesh Lekha’ (Last writings),
which he wrote before his final breath in 1941. He had written 65 poetry and the most notable
poems for which he is renowned and fetched him Nobel Prize is Gitanjali (Songs offering). This
book is now a part of the Collection from the UNESCO of Representative works.
Rabindranath drew inspiration from ancient poets like Kabir and Ramprasad Sen and thus his
poetry is often compared to the 15th and 16th century works of classical poets. By infusing his
own style of writing, he made people take note of not only his works but also the works of
ancient Indian poets. Interestingly, he penned down a poem in 1893 and addressed a future poet
through his work, He urged the yet to be born poet to remember Tagore and his works while
reading the poem. Some of his best work includes ‘Balika’, ‘Purobi’, ‘Sonar Tori’ and ‘Gitanjai’
(Kellman, 2009).
“Been born in the West he would now be (as) revered as Shakespeare and Goethe.” Ravi
Shankar, a great musician wrote on his book Raga Mala about Rabindranath Tagore. From such
claim we can confer what a great personality Tagore is. For a great man like Tagore who has
created varied literature gems, I hope my short autobiography did justice to his works and hope
that the readers enjoyed reading it.
