48 ETUDES for FRENCH HORN by VERNE REYNOLDS , mz G. SCHIRMER New York/London Foreword 48 Etudes for French Horn are designed to explore beyond the present limits of horn technique and are meant to form a contemporary extension to the older studies of Kopprasch, Gallay, Maxime-Aphonse, etc. While at first glance many of these Etudes may appear difficult to the point of imprac- ticality, they are purposely so written. It is the writer's belief that existing study-methods, although invaluable for the beginning and intermediate horn student, are too readily playable for those of greater attainment, offering little in the way of technical challenge and serving mainly as random mechanical aids to keeping in proper playing condition. Each one of these 48 Etudes, written expressly for the advanced player, concentrates on an immediately identifiable problem, distilled to its essence, at a virtuoso level. A diligent working-out of the problems presented will, without qualification, result in greater endurance in the high register, more agility in passing from one register to another, more sureness in large interval leaps, and increased command of rhythmic intricacies. Arrangement of the Etudes is as follows: 1-23 are essentially interval studies, starting with the half-step and proceeding through the octave, with one tongued and one slurred Etude for cach interval. Etudes 24-28 are in the low register; Etudes 29-36 are in the high register; Etudes 37-43 deal with meter changes; Etude 44 is unmeasured; Etudes 45 and 46 are tonguing exercises in duple and triple groupings; Etude 47 presents lip trills and Etude 48 explores hand muting. Although these Etudes are written primarily for F hom, much can be gained by practicing them in all transpositions, particularly those that contain a large number of accidentals. In the fast Etudes, when taken at the metronome mark indicated, the rests are planned as breathing places. It is hoped that these Etudes contain sufficient intrinsic musical merit to warrant their inclusion into the solo hom literature: specifically Numbers 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 18, 30 and 44.
