Internal Combustion Engines

This document appears to be a homework assignment for an internal combustion engines class consisting of several students' names and their answers to various questions about two-stroke and four-stroke engines. The questions and answers cover topics like the differences between spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, the operation of two-stroke engines, advantages and disadvantages of two-stroke versus four-stroke engines, piston mass calculations, engine configurations, and firing intervals in radial engines.

ANSWERS
Answer to 1-1.
* SI technology produces less smoke after ignition.

* SI engines are smaller because they do not need a large combustion

chamber.

* Contrary to SI technology, it does not use spark plugs in compression

ignition.

* Si engines operate in the otto cycle and CI engines in diesel cycles.

* CI generates more noise than SI when operating.

Answer to 1-2. The two-stroke engine has two strokes. In the first stroke,
suction and compression take place, and in the second, combustion and
exhaust. This engine type does not have intake and exhaust valves. Suction and
exhaust processes are carried out by means of pressure differences occurring
in the cylinder. For this reason, a twostroke cycle engine should always have an
inlet pressure increase so that the piston compresses the fuel oil and air
mixture.
Answer to 1-3. Advantage of a two-stroke engine over a four-stroke engine;

* Two-stroke engines get easy starting even in cold weather.

* The two-stroke engine is simpler and less costly than the fourstroke engine.
Advantege of a four-stroke engine over a two-stroke engine;
* It is more efficient than two-stroke engines.

* Fuel and oil consumption is lower than two-stroke engines.

Answer to 1-4.
a) Two-stroke engines have less moving number than four-stroke
engines. 2 stroke engine are light in weight as compared. 2 stroke
engine have light weight flywheel as compared to 4 stroke engine. 2
stroke engine has highest power to weight ratio. 2 stroke engines
require less space as compared to 4 stroke engines. Its structure is
simpler, so it is used in smaller engines.
b) 2 stroke engine are easy to manufacture .2 stroke engine has highest
power to weight ratio. 2 stroke engine are light in weight as compared. 2
stroke engine have light weight flywheel as compared to 4 stroke
engines.
c) 4 stroke engines are more efficient than 2 stroke engines. Fuel
consumption is low in four-stroke engines. Oil consumption is high in
four-stroke engines.
d) Two stroke engine more powerful than four stroke engine almoust two
times power the engine would be almoust two times stronger.

Answer to 1-5.
Pressure = Force / Area Force = Mass *
Acceleration 98 kPa – 22 kPa / π * (1.2m / 2)^2) =
86 kN g=9,81 m/s^2
86 kN / 9,81 m/s^2 = kg it’s the total mass
2700 kg piston’s mass

a) 8766 – 2700 = 6066 kg

b) 8766 + 2700 = 11466 kg

Answer to 1-6.
Answer to 1-7. Two automobile engines have the same total
displacement volume and the same total power produced within the
cylinders. List the possible advantages of:
A V6 over a straight six engines
• V6 takes up less space.
• V6 produces more torque at low rpm A V8 over a V6
• High power A V6 over a V8

• Low fuel consumption

• Low vibration
An opposed cylinder four over a straight four
• highly efficient
• lighter
• Better compact design
An in-line six over an in-line four
• High power
• Better torque

Answer to 1-8. The radial engine ignites half time the total number
of cylinders for each revolution.
(a) 60°/4.5= 80° degree firing
There is a fever at a pain of 80
degrees.
(b) Terry 4.5 power stroke occcurs in the tour.
(c) 4.5×900 d/d=4050
4050/60=67.5 power stroke
