WELCOME SPEECH

President of Asean Otorhinolaryngological Head and Neck Federation

Barrie Tan, MD

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is my great pleasure to announce the upcoming 19th ASEAN ORL-HNS Congress scheduled from 21-23
October 2021. It will be hosted by Indonesia in beautiful Medan. For the first time ever, the congress will
run in a hybrid format with both online and on-site participation. The online access of the conference will
allow for the congress to reach audiences worldwide, in a manner not seen before. Truly, even in this
global pandemic of COVID-19 infections, with the closing of physical borders, technology has opened up
new vistas for online collaborations and the opening of digital borders. Conferences worldwide are now
coming straight into homes and with a matter of convenience that is unparalleled.

The conference will also be run physically in conjunction with the 11th Indonesian ORL-HNS Scientific
Meeting, with many of our Indonesian colleagues meeting together in Medan. I salute the organising
committee for planning and making this conference possible. They are making extensive preparations in
putting together a robust scientific program. I hope that you will join us for our biennial congress, where
the spirit of friendship and collegiality has remained strong for decades. I look forward to meeting each
of you either physically or digitally during the congress! Finally, as all our countries continue to battle the
COVID-19 pandemic, may you keep safe and healthy as you serve your communities.
