MGT 200 Assignment 2

The document is a student assignment containing true/false and multiple choice questions about data visualization techniques. It tests the student's knowledge of histograms, bar charts, pie charts, scatter plots, stem-and-leaf diagrams, and determining what data types are suitable for different graph types. The student answered each question correctly and provided justifications for their responses by referencing properties of the graph types.

TRUE/FALSE - Write 'T' if the statement is true and 'F' if the statement is false. Give
justifications/explanations for your choice – a maximum of three statements.

JUSTIFICATION STATEMETNS COPIED FROM OTHER STUDENTS OR SHARED

TO OTHERS IS CONSIDERED CHEATING AND WILL BEAR NO MARK. IF YOU
USE OTHER SOURCES, ENSURE YOU PROVIDE REFERNCE. COPY PASTING
FROM OTHER SOURCES WITHOUT PROPER REFERENCING IS CONSIDERED
PLIGIARISM.

1) Stacked dot plots are useful in understanding the association between two paired
quantitative variables (X, Y).

⊚ True

Justifications/explanations: Since a scatter plot is used to show the connection or relation of

two numerical info/ quantitative data.

2) A pie chart can generally be used instead of a bar chart

⊚ False

Justifications/explanations: Pie charts, are easier to interpret but in many cases, it does
represent a data correctly. Moreover, through bar charts data are compared much easily and
effectively. However, in other cases pie chart could also be used.

3) Except for the Y-axis scaling, a histogram will look the same if we use relative
frequencies instead of raw frequencies (with the same bin limits).

Version 1 1
⊚ True

Justifications/explanations: In a histogram it does not affect the shape of a histogram if we use

relative frequencies. To clarify, this happens because the heights will be connected to one
another no matter what kind of frequency is used.

MULTIPLE CHOICE - Choose the one alternative that best completes the statement or
answers the question. Give justifications for your choice – a maximum of three statements.

4) Histograms generally do not reveal the

A) exact data range.

B) modal classes (bins).
C) degree of skewness.
D) relative frequencies.

Justifications/explanations: Because in histograms we use bars/bins, therefore, unlike a bar

graph it is not able to show the exact data range.

5) The distribution pictured below is

A) bimodal and skewed right.

B) bimodal and skewed left.
C) skewed right.
D) skewed left.

Version 1 2
Justifications/explanations: Firstly, it is a bimodal (two modes) since it has two visible high
points and they are separated by a gap in the middle. Moreover, it is right skewed because the
right tail is longer that the left one.

6) A line chart would not be suitable to display which data?

A) U.S. oil imports from OPEC nations for the last 20 years
B) Annual compensation of the top 50 CEOs
C) Exxon-Mobil’s quarterly sales data for the last five years
D) Daily stock market closing prices of Microsoft for the past month

Justifications/explanations: Line Charts are very efficient for showing trends, and with the
lines connected to the dots you can understand if the trend is increasing or decreasing. Also, they
are used to show the relationship of changes that occur to a data over a period of time.

7) Below is a sorted stem-and-leaf diagram for the measured speeds (miles per hour) of 49
randomly chosen vehicles on highway I-80 in Nebraska. What is the fourth slowest speed in the
sorted data array?

Stem unit = 10

Leaf unit = 1

Frequency Stem Leaf

1 4 9

1 5 5

17 6 0 1 2 2 2 4 5 5 5 5 6 6 8 8 9 9 9

19 7 0 1 1 1 2 3 3 3 4 5 6 6 6 7 7 8 9 9 9

7 8 0 1 3 3 5 5 7

Version 1 3
4 9 0 1 2 2

49

A) 61
B) 60
C) 55
D) Impossible to tell

Justifications/explanations: According to the data, it can be interpreted that 61 is the fourth

slowest speed.

8) Which data would be suitable for a pie chart?

A) Percent vote in the last election by party (Democrat, Republican, Other)

B) Retail prices of six major brands of color laser printers
C) Labor cost per vehicle for 10 major world automakers
D) Prices paid by 10 students for their accounting textbooks

Justifications/explanations: There are many data types that can be used to show through Pie
charts and one of them are percentages. This means that pie charts are effective in showing
percentages and the answer A is correct.

Creating graphs:

9) Please see supplementary data provided in Excel file “10_US_Counties” along with this
assignment. Use the data to:

a) Construct a histogram for Poverty% with 20 bins. Interpret the graph.

b) Create a scatter plot for Poverty% and Unempt variables. Interpret the graph.

Version 1 4
Please provide the Excel file in which you create above graphs along with your response on this
document.
