Your Nails

Your nails have a LOT to say about your overall health.

A touch of white here, a rosy tinge there, some rippling, or some

bumps may be a sign of disease in the body.

In fact, many doctors can tell if people have a serious illness such as
heart disease or cancer simply by looking at the nails.

Let’s take a look at thirteen of the most common nail conditions and
what they may suggest.

1. White Nails
Your fingernails will naturally have white at
the tips. However, if your whole nail is white
or noticeably pale, this could be a sign of
illness. White nails could mean you have
anemia (a low red blood cell count).

1
It could also be a sign of liver disease, hepatitis, or low protein stores
in the body (hypoalbuminemia). And it may also be associated with
diabetes, an overactive thyroid, congestive heart failure, or a lack of
nutrients in your diet. If your nails are mostly white with a narrow pink
band at the tip, you may have a condition called Terry's nails.

2. Yellow Nails

When your nails become

discolored, it usually means
that you’ve picked up an
infection or nail fungus. If your
nails have been damaged by
dyes or harsh products, fresh
nail growth should be healthy
and of clear color.

If your nails continue to be

yellow, there may be something else going on in your body, including
something possibly more serious. Conditions such as chronic lung
conditions, internal malignancies, lymphatic obstructions, and even
rheumatoid arthritis can cause yellow nails.

Vitamin or mineral deficiencies can also cause nails to appear yellow.

Figuring out those deficiencies and increasing the proper nutrients in
your diet may stop the problem.

In some cases, nails that remain yellow despite repeated treatment can
be a symptom of thyroid conditions, psoriasis, or even diabetes. In
rare situations, yellow nails can indicate the presence of skin cancer. A
condition called yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is indicated by continually
yellow nails and respiratory or lymphatic problems.

2
3. Blue Nails
If your fingernails have a blue tint,
this could be a sign that your body
isn’t getting enough oxygen. It can
happen when your hand is exposed
to cold temperatures, which causes
your blood vessels to shrink to
conserve energy. Once you’re
warmed up, the normal color
should return. If the nails remain
blue, however, there may be an
underlying health disorder that
prevents the body from getting
enough oxygen through blood
circulation.

Blue Nails could also mean you have Cyanosis (a low or lack of oxygen
in your red blood cells). This may cause the skin underneath your nails
and elsewhere – such as the feet, lips, and/or mucous membranes -- to
be a bluish-purple color. Cold temperature exposure or abnormally
high hemoglobin levels may cause cyanosis.

Blue Nails may also be a sign of lung issues (such as emphysema),

heart problems, excessive silver consumption, bacterial infection in the
nail, and Wilson’s disease (a genetic condition that causes high levels
of copper in the body). Many different lung problems, heart problems,
and blood vessel problems can lead to blue nails.

Finally, blue nails could also be a side effect of a medication you are
taking.

3
4. Red Streaks in the Nail

Red to reddish-brown lines of blood under

the nails that run in the nails direction of
growth and are called splinter hemorrhages
because they look like a splinter under the
fingernail.

Splinter hemorrhages occur when tiny blood

clots known as microemboli damage the
small capillaries under the nails. Basically,
blood leaks or swells from the small blood
vessels that run up and down the nail bed.

One of the most common causes of splinter hemorrhages is trauma to

the nails. However, red streaks in the nail may also result from several
conditions, including psoriasis fungal infection, heart valve infection,
and blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis).

5. Dark Lines Beneath the Nail

If you notice dark lines that
are about as wide as a pen’s
ink cartridge, this could be a
sign of melanoma. This is a
dangerous type of skin
cancer. If you notice this,
please see your health care
provider promptly.

Other causes of dark lines beneath the nail are more common and not
dangerous. These include moles, trauma, or medication-induced

4
changes. It’s also common for people with darker skin types to have
non-cancerous dark lines under the nails.

6. Split Nails
If your nails become brittle or if
they split repeatedly, this could
reveal conditions such as:
thyroid disease, psoriasis,
repeated trauma, or a side effect
from medication.

Do note that very frequent

contact with water and/or excessive handwashing, dishwashing, or
other uses of cleansers with the hands may also cause split nails.

If the cracking or splitting is accompanied by a yellow color, the cause

could be a fungal infection.

7. Cracked Nails
Onychoschizia, or splitting of the
fingernails, is a common problem
seen by dermatologists.
Onychoschizia includes splitting,
brittle, soft, or thin nails, and is
more common in women.

It can occur due to a deficiency in

certain vitamins or even due to
emotional trauma.

5
Most commonly, though, it is caused by nail procedures and cosmetics
(such as polish, polish removers, and hardeners) or occupational
exposure to various chemicals.

8. Nail Clubbing
Nail clubbing does not refer to
your nails dancing in night clubs
until the wee hours of the
morning.

Instead, it occurs when the tips of

the fingers enlarge and the nails
curve around the fingertips. It may
occur alone or with other symptoms such as shortness of breath or
coughing.

It is sometimes the result of low oxygen in the blood and is commonly

associated with lung disease.

Other possible causes include inflammatory bowel disease, heart

disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, and even HIV.

Do note, though, that for some people, nail clubbing is a normal

inherited trait.

9. Puffy, Red Nail Fold

The nail fold is the skin at the base of the nail where your nail grows
from, often referred to as the cuticle. If your nail fold is puffy, this is
typically due to inflammation called “paronychia.” The most common
cause of this nail fold inflammation is a skin infection from bacteria,

6
viruses, or yeast. It can also occur from an injury or irritation and is
about three times more common in women than in men.

Sometimes, it's associated with

an underlying skin condition,
such as eczema or psoriasis, or
another medical condition, such
as diabetes or HIV. Less
commonly, this can happen
because of lupus or other
connective tissue disorders.

Paronychia can develop over a few hours (acute paronychia). If it lasts

for more than six weeks, it's known as chronic paronychia. Acute
infective paronychia usually starts after a minor injury to the nail fold,
such as from nail-biting, picking, or manicures. The affected area is
red, warm, tender, and swollen. After a while, pus can form around the
nail and may lift the nail.

Acute paronychia is often the result of a staphylococcus infection, but

it can sometimes be caused by the virus responsible for cold sores
(herpes simplex virus). In this case, it's known as herpetic whitlow.
Treatment for acute paronychia typically includes antibiotic creams or
tablets. If there's a large amount of pus, surgically draining it can help.
With treatment, an infected nail fold can clear up in a few days. If it isn't
treated or doesn't respond to treatment, the problem can become
long-term (chronic).

Chronic paronychia often affects people who have their hands in

water for long periods or who come into contact with chemicals, such
as cleaners, bartenders, canteen staff, or fishmongers. It may start in
one nail fold but can affect several fingers. The affected nail folds are
swollen and may be red and sore from time to time, often after
exposure to water. The nail plate gradually becomes thickened and
ridged as it grows. It may become yellow or green and brittle. It can

7
take months for chronic paronychia to clear, and up to a year after that,
for your nails to return to normal. Keeping your hands dry and warm,
frequently using emollient hand cream, and not biting or picking your
nails can help.

10. Ridges on the Nails

Having vertical ridges on the

fingernails refers to the presence of
tiny raised lines or ridges that run up
and down the length of the nail.
Ridges are among the different
kinds of nail abnormalities that can
develop due to aging, nail injury,
trauma, or underlying medical
conditions.

The direction of the ridges is

important to notice. If ridges are
parallel to your fingers, it may simply
be a reflection of aging. It may also indicate chronic trauma to the
region, including repeat wet/dry cycles and excess contact with water.
Finally, ridges parallel to your fingers may reflect a lack of certain
vitamins and minerals in your diet, such as protein, calcium, zinc, or
vitamin A.

If the ridges are across the nail, this could be a sign of diabetes, severe
injury, or a medication side effect.

Fingernails are actually made by living skin cells in your fingers. So,
finally, a skin condition such as eczema may also lead to fingernail
ridges.

8
11. Rippled or Pitted Nails
Nail pitting is when you have tiny dents in your
fingernails or toenails. It can be a sign of
psoriasis, eczema, or joint inflammation. You
might also get them due to genetics (i.e., they
run in your family).

Small pinpoint depressions of the surface of the

nail can also occur after trauma to the surface of
the nail. Finally, they sometimes occur in
patients with particular types of hair loss and
arthritis.

12. Nail Lifting

Nail lifting occurs when the surface

of the nail (called the nail plate)
separates from the underlying skin
(called the nail bed). Key causes of
this condition include thyroid
disease, psoriasis, fungal infection,
and medication side effects. Nail
lifting can also occur with
pregnancy.

9
13. Thyroid Nails
Thyroid diseases such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may
cause many nail issues. Watch for:

• Absence of the lunula, the

little white moons of the
nails
• Longitudinal ridging of
the nails, or Beau’s Lines
(transverse grooves or
depressions of the nail
plate)
• Spoon-shaped nail plates know as koilonychia
• Separation of the nail from the nail bed knows as onycholysis
• Thinning of the nail fold and spreading of the cuticle over the
nail plate (pterygium unguis)
• Onychomycosis (fungal infection of the nail)
• Yellow nail syndrome
• Brittleness
• Slow growth, and thickening.

Your Tongue
Sticking your tongue out is a favorite insult during childhood.

However, it’s important for adults to do so periodically in the mirror

not to insult themselves, but to assess their own health.

A healthy tongue should be pink and covered with small nodules

(papillae). Any deviation from your tongue's normal appearance, or
any pain, may be cause for concern.

For example, a black and hairy looking tongue can signal poor oral
hygiene or diabetes. If your tongue is bright red, it could signal a
deficiency in folic acid, vitamin B12, or iron. It could also mean that you
have strep throat or a fever.

14. White Coating

A lumpy, white-coated tongue is
often the condition called
thrush, an oral yeast infection
caused by overproduction of
candida.

The condition is often linked to

taking antibiotics. Your tongue is
home to naturally occurring
bacteria and yeast. When you take an antibiotic, which selectively kills
off bacteria, it can allow yeast, which is not killed by antibiotics, to take
over. This may cause taste disturbances or a bit of pain.

Common in young children, thrush also affects people with

autoimmune diseases… people with diabetes whose condition may
not be well-0managed… chemotherapy patients… those who are

12
taking inhaled steroids for asthma or lung disease… and the elderly,
especially denture wearers.

Finally, oral steroids may also trigger thrush.

15. White Spots

A condition in which the cells in the
mouth grow excessively is called
leukoplakia, which leads to white
patches on the tongue and inside
the mouth.

Leukoplakia can develop when the

tongue has been irritated. It’s often
seen in people who use tobacco
products. It can be a precursor to cancer but isn’t inherently
dangerous by itself.

If you see what you think could be leukoplakia, do contact a medical

professional.

16. Red Tongue

A glossy, bright red tongue may be a sign your body is lacking iron or
B12. Vitamin B12 and iron are needed to mature papillae (small
bumps) on the tongue. If you are deficient in those vitamins, you can
lose those papillae, which can make your tongue appear very smooth.

If you are experiencing a deficiency in these vitamins, you'll most likely

notice other symptoms as well, such as fatigue, weakness, balance

13
problems, and memory difficulties. In severe cases, this can also cause
very excessive pain when eating hot liquids or spicy food.

Do note that deficiencies in these

vitamins may be associated with an
autoimmune disease in the
gastrointestinal (GI) tract, in which the
stomach doesn’t properly absorb
vitamins.

Meanwhile, scarlet fever is an infection

that causes the tongue to have a
strawberry-like (red and bumpy)
appearance. If you have a high fever accompanying a red tongue, do
consult a medical professional.

Finally, Kawasaki disease is a condition that can also cause the tongue
to have a strawberry-like appearance. It is usually seen in children
under the age of 5 and is accompanied by a high fever. Kawasaki
disease is a serious condition that demands immediate medical
evaluation.

17. Black and Hairy

If your tongue is black and hairy it typically means a person needs to
improve their oral hygiene. A tongue covered in dark hairs (actually
called black hairy tongue) may not be pleasant looking, but medical
professionals tend to agree it is usually not cause for major concern.

14
Much like hair, the papillae on your
tongue grow throughout your
lifetime. In some people, they
become excessively long, which
makes them more likely to harbor
bacteria. When these bacteria grow,
they may look dark or black, and the
overgrown papillae can appear hair-
like. This can also cause bad breath,
abnormalities in taste, and the
excess bacteria may eventually lead
to other health concerns -- all
prompting the need for improved
oral hygiene (including brushing the tongue and/or using a tongue
scraper).

More rarely, people who have diabetes, are taking antibiotics, or

receiving chemotherapy may also develop a black hairy tongue.

18. Sore or bumpy tongue

If you have painful bumps on
your tongue it might be a sign of
inflammation, tongue trauma
(like accidentally biting your
tongue or scalding it on
something too hot), smoking,
canker sores (mouth ulcers), or
oral cancer.

Do note that a lump or sore on your tongue that doesn’t go away

within two weeks could be an indication of oral cancer and you should
consult a medical professional. (Keep in mind that many oral cancers
don’t hurt in the early stages, so don’t assume a lack of pain means
nothing is wrong.)
15
19. Tongue Wrinkles and “Cracks”
Fissures and cracks in the tongue
are typically harmless, but problems
can arise if poor dental hygiene
leads to infection within the crevices.
Occasionally, a fungal infection can
develop inside the cleft. You will
suddenly have pain, a foul smell,
and sometimes burning. Often the
infection is treated with a topical antifungal medication. Some dental
appliances, like dentures, can also cause indentations on the tongue.
Make sure that all dental fixtures fit well, make sure you drink enough
water, and practice good oral hygiene.

20. Persistent Red Lesions

Not to be confused with a
canker sore, which usually
resolves itself within two weeks,
red lesions or patches that
don’t go away could suggest a
more serious disease such as
cancer. Do get it checked by a
medical professional as soon as
possible (even if it’s not
bothering you, as many oral cancers, for example, don’t hurt in their
early stages.)

17
Your Eyes
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul.

They’re often also the window to early changes in health, such as high
blood pressure and diabetes. In part that’s because the eyes have
some of the smallest blood vessels in your body and therefore send
“signals” not easily detectable elsewhere in the body.

You can sometimes notice these changes yourself. It is important to

routinely assess the health of your eyes, and if you do notice any
changes – whether that means how they look, or how you see through
them – do consider contacting a medical professional.

21. Cloudy Eyes

Cloudy or “greying over” of the
eyes is typically a sign of
cataracts.

This is often accompanied by

clouded / blurred / dimmed
vision; vision problems at night;
sensitivity to light and glare;
detecting “halos” around lights;
and the frequent need for stronger eyeglass / contact prescriptions.

This is a common condition in older adults especially. There are

different forms of cataracts, and they develop due to the buildup of
proteins on the lens of your eye. Various treatments are available.

18
22. Chronically Bloodshot Eyes
If you have bloodshot eyes, it
could be due to a range of
different causes, such as allergies,
irritation from chemicals or
smoke, improperly fitted or torn
contact lenses, or a bacterial or
viral infection such as pinkeye.

It could also be an indication of glaucoma, corneal ulcer, or even high

blood pressure, especially if the bloodshot eyes are persistent.

Regarding high blood pressure, it is characterized by having too much

pressure in the blood vessels. It can lead to heart disease and stroke.
And people often don’t even know they have it, as it typically doesn’t
have overt physical symptoms.

However, high blood pressure can sometimes be detected in the eyes

– and often, during eye exams, eye doctors spot it before it has even
been diagnosed by family doctors.

That’s because damaged blood vessels from the high blood pressure
lead to swelling, hemorrhages, and leaking in the tiny blood vessels of
the eyes.

Do consult with a medical professional as soon as possible if your eyes

are bloodshot and you aren’t certain of the cause, because it could be
something serious such as glaucoma – and it could be early detection
of high blood pressure, which can truly be lifesaving.

19
23. Eye Moles, Eyelid Sores, and Other Possible
Cancer Signs

What appears to be a freckle or a

mole in the eye is called a nevus.
Some people are born with harmless
ones. And they are usually harmless
to those who develop them later in
life, too, though they should be
routinely checked by a medical
professional as they could develop
into cancer.

Meanwhile, sores that develop on or near the eyelid – and/or if there is

a noticeable loss of eyelashes – could detect a form of skin cancer
called eyelid carcinoma. Again, do consult with a medical professional
if you notice these.

Also of note, other forms of cancer are sometimes detected via the
eyes, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and brain cancer. These are
typically detected by eye doctors and other professionals, but if you
see what appears to be a creamy yellow and elevated mass “deep” in
the retina, this could be a sign.

24. Floaters, Blurred Vision, and Other Diabetes

Symptoms
Diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina at the
back of the eye, resulting in Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Diabetic
Macular Edema (DME). This is more so detected by how you see out of
your eyes versus what you see in them.

20
Some symptoms to watch for include spots or dark strings that appear
to be “floating” in your vision, impaired color vision, dark or empty
spaces in vision, vision loss, the feeling of pressure in the eyes, and
blurred vision (in fact, an August 2014 study found that 73% of
diabetic patients sampled reported blurred vision).

Now, any of these symptoms may indicate other issues; blurred vision,
for example, typically just means you need glasses, or it could indicate
cataracts or macular degeneration. Whatever the cause, don’t ignore
these symptoms, because it could point to a serious issue and taking
action on it early tends to greatly improve outcomes.

25. Swelling and Redness

There’s a well-known connection between inflammatory diseases and

inflammation in the eye. These diseases include inflammatory bowel
disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus,
and other autoimmune diseases.

21
One common sign is swelling and
redness particularly in the middle part of
the eye (called the uvea), a condition
known as “uveitis.”

This can cause permanent damage to the

eye and cause partial or complete vision
loss, so if you do detect it consult with a
medical professional as soon as possible.

26. Grey Ring Around the Cornea

A thin gray ring around the
cornea of the eye is a frequent
indicator of high cholesterol
and/or high triglycerides.
Yellowish deposits of actual
cholesterol in the eyelid may also
be present.

This may also indicate or lead to

“retinal blood vessel occlusion,” where due to the high cholesterol or
high blood pressure, a blood clot blocks one or more veins, restricting
blood flow to the back of the eye. Temporary or permanent vision loss
can result, which is yet another reason to address cholesterol and
blood pressure issues.

27. Bulging Eyes

Diseases of the thyroid can make themselves apparent in the eyes in
several ways.

22
Protruding or bulging eyes can
be a sign of an overactive thyroid
gland, also known as Graves’
disease. The overactive thyroid
(hyperthyroidism) causes the
extraocular muscles to enlarge
and stiffen, causing the bulging.

The thyroid gland controls the

hormones that regulate tear production, so chronically dry eyes – a.k.a.
dry eye disease – could indicate thyroid issues.

The frequent feeling of irritation or grittiness in the eyes, redness or

inflammation of the conjunctiva (the white part of the eyeball), eyelid
swelling, light sensitivity, and double vision are other eye symptoms
that may suggest thyroid issues.

28. Yellow Eyes

If the whites of your eyes are
yellowing like old paper, it is a
caution you’re your body is sending
that something is wrong. And
jaundice is a likely culprit.

Jaundice is a condition that occurs

when there’s too much bilirubin, a
yellow compound formed from the breakdown of red blood cells, in
your blood. If your liver can’t filter the cells, bilirubin builds up and can
cause your eyes and skin to turn yellow.

Some babies are born with jaundice. In adults, meanwhile, it can

develop due to an infection like hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease,
or something blocking your bile ducts like gallstones or cancer.
23
29. Droopy Eyelids
When one or both eyelids appears
to droop it is called ptosis. Some
are born with it, and for those who
develop it later, there are a range
of possible causes.

For example, aging can cause

drooping eyelids simply because
the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid can stretch over time and
cause the eyelid to fall.

Nerve injuries can also cause it, and surgeries such as those for
cataracts or LASIK can also stretch the muscles and tendons and cause
it.

However, if one or both of your eyelids sag and you aren’t certain why,
it could indicate a more serious disease, such as stroke, brain tumor, or
cancer of the nerves or muscles. Particularly when both eyelids sag, it
could indicate myasthenia gravis (MG), a neuromuscular disorder.
The bottom line is, if drooping eyelids do appear, have it checked by a
medical professional.

So, there you have it, you are now a better “body reader” with an eye
toward 29 common signs to watch for on your nails, tongue, and eyes
that may indicate certain health conditions.

As you can likely tell, there are many other possible signs of disease
the nails, tongue, eyes – and other body parts, too, such as the skin –
can reveal.

And while you may not be a highly trained medical professional, the
real bottom line is that it is important for you to watch for changes
from what is normal -- and use your best judgement to alert medical
professionals you trust to such changes, as they are your body’s way of
saying “something is off here, please pay attention.”
