This lesson will help you utilize appropriate different kitchen tools, equipment
and paraphernalia. This will help you also identify types of tools, equipment and
paraphernalia which will be discussed below.

What’s New
Everyone should familiarize the different types of kitchen tools,
equipment, and paraphernalia so that cooking will be easier. Each tool is precisely
designed for a specific purpose. Classifying and choosing the right equipment for the
task, and the knowledge of how to use it allow your work in the kitchen to proceed
smoothly, comfortably, efficiently and most importantly – safely. It also decrease the
amount of effort required to get a job done right without causing damage to the
equipment or the surface being work on
Below are the different types of kitchen tools, equipment, and paraphernalia:
3 Basic Kinds of Kitchen Tools, Equipment and Paraphernalia
A. Major Appliances or Equipment – is a large machine in home appliance used for
routine housekeeping tasks such as cooking or food preservation and it uses
electricity.
Refrigerator- is an appliance or compartment which is artificially kept cool and used
to store food and drink.
Freezer - a refrigerated compartment, cabinet, or room for preserving food at very low
temperatures.

B. Auxiliary Equipment and Small Appliances. Small appliances are small electric
portable or semi-portable machines, generally used on table-tops or counter tops with
specialized uses to accomplish a household task. Examples include microwave ovens,
toasters, humidifiers, food processors and coffeemakers.
Electric Mixer- also called a hand mixer or stand mixer, is a kitchen device that uses
a gear-driven mechanism to rotate a set of "beaters" in a bowl containing the food or
liquids to be prepared by mixing them.
Food Processor- is a kitchen appliance used to facilitate repetitive tasks in the
preparation of food

Blender - consists of a blender container with a rotating metal blade at the bottom,
powered by an electric motor that is in the base.
Toaster- is an electric small appliance designed to expose various types of sliced bread
to radiant heat, browning the bread so it becomes toast .

Coffee maker- is made out of plastic, including the body and the basket which holds
the filter. The base plate, warmer plate, and heating unit are made out of various
metals, usually steel or anodized aluminum. The carafe is made out of heat-proof
glass.
Rice cooker- also called rice steamer is an automated kitchen appliance used to boil
or steam rice. It consists of a heat source, a cooking bowl, and a thermostat. The
thermostat measures the temperature of the cooking bowl and controls the heat.

Griddle - it is a broad flat cooking device heated by gas, electricity, wood, or coal. It
can be also a piece of cookware, such as a non-stick or cast iron griddle that is heated
over a burner, or it can be built into a range.
Pots and pan- are types of food preparation containers, commonly found in a kitchen.
Cookware comprises cooking vessels, such as saucepans and frying pans, intended for
use on a stove or range cooktop.

Deep fryer- generally consists of a temperature controlled, cooking chamber to hold
the cooking oil, which may or may not have a lid.
Crockery- are the dishes or dishware used for setting a table, serving food and dining.
It includes cutlery, glassware, serving dishes and other items for practical as well as
decorative purposes.

C. Kitchen Utensils – are small hand held tools used for food preparation like cutting
food items, heating food on an open fire or on a stove, baking, grinding, mixing,
blending, and measuring; different kitchen utensils are made for each task.
