CRIMINOLOGY-EXAM 1
Remote Learning
REVIEW AND STUDY GUIDE
Spring 2021
Bernadette J. Holmes, Ph.D.

This review and study guide is intended to provide general steps and strategies for effective
exam preparation. Do not assume that the study guide is all inclusive of the materials
covered on the exam. These questions are an aid, not a contract that defines the content of
the exam. The first exam covering chapters 1-3, is re-scheduled for Thursday, February 18,
2021. A total of 30-35 questions will be included.

(1) Understand the multidisciplinary nature of the field of criminology. Differentiate

between the crime problem vs. the problems of crime. Discuss the sociological
perspective of crime as a social problem. How does the media shape and influence
societal conceptions of crime? What is the culture of fear? What is the relationship
between power, inequality, and the criminalization process?

(2) Differentiate between civil law and criminal law. What are the purposes and objectives
of criminal law? Understand the basic elements of crime (actus reus and mens rea).
Discuss the ways in which criminal responsibility is related to these legal elements. Be
familiar with the legal basis of the insanity defense. What is legal competency?
What are the informal processes that affect the insanity defense?

(3) Distinguish between the three most common methods of collecting crime data. Be
familiar with the Uniform Crime Report and understand such concepts as index crimes,
crime rates, and clearance rates. Be familiar with alternative methods of crime
statistics, including differences and similarities between official self-report, and
victimization data. Know the geographic and social correlates of crime.

(4) What is comparative criminology? What can we learn by looking at crime data from
other countries? Why is the homicide rate so high in the United States? What is the
relationship between crime and inequality? [We will come back to this discussion]
