Navigation & Path Making Application For Ambulance Services

This paper proposes a RFID-based smart traffic control system for emergency vehicles. The system uses RFID tags on emergency vehicles like ambulances to communicate with RFID readers installed at traffic signals. When an emergency vehicle approaches an intersection, the system detects the RFID tag and automatically switches the traffic signals to give the emergency vehicle right of way by clearing traffic. This allows emergency vehicles to quickly pass through congested areas and reduce delays, helping save more lives. The growing population and vehicle numbers in countries like India are leading to more traffic jams and road accidents. Existing systems do not efficiently help emergency vehicles navigate heavy traffic. The proposed RFID system aims to solve these issues.

1. AIM
We aim to design a project that allows an ambulance to be on the shortest path to the nearest
hospital and also a control system which notifies the traffic signals on the path of the ambulance
to ensure the traffic will be cleared so that the ambulance doesn’t have to wait or be stuck in
traffic which may cost the lives of many.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Navigation & Path Making Application for Ambulance Services is project designed to solve the
problems faced by the current existing system and make it more efficient by introducing the new
concepts like application control and traffic routing system based on real time traffic.

3. INTRODUCTION
Emergency patient transportation via ambulances becomes a very critical case in metropolitan
cities due to rising traffic. Though the ambulances try to find their way through the city, the
movement of traffic is very slow because of its volume. Hence, the smart navigation system will
help the ambulance to reach quickly to the nearby hospital. There is huge traffic in cities due to
which ambulances get delayed in reaching to the patient or moving the patient in the ambulance
to the hospital. If the traffic signals and the traffic ahead of ambulances are controlled, the
ambulance navigation will become easier and thus save a patient’s life. The system will also not
keep traffic on the other three sides blocked because the signal will be turned green only when it
is needed. Thus, this system will help in faster movement of people.

4. EXISTING SYSTEM
The term ambulance comes from the Latin word "ambulare" as meaning "to walk or move about''
which is a reference to early medical care where patients were moved by lifting or wheeling. The
word originally meant a moving hospital, which follows an army in its movements.
Ambulances were first used for emergency transportation in 1487 by the Spanish forces during
the siege of Málaga by the Catholic Monarchs against the Emirate of Granada.
During the American Civil War vehicles for conveying the wounded off the field of battle were
called ambulance wagons.
4.1. Types of Ambulances
Ambulances can be categorized into types depending on whether they transport patients,
and under what conditions. In some cases, ambulances may fulfil more than one function.

–Emergency Ambulance: The most common type of ambulance, which offers care to
patients with a severe illness or injury.
–Patient Transport Ambulance: An Ambulance whose role is to transport patients to,
from or amongst places of medical procedures, such as hospital or dialysis center, for
non-urgent care. These can be vans, buses, or other vehicles.
–Ambulance bus: A large ambulance, usually based upon a bus chassis, that can
evacuate and transport many patients.
–Bariatric ambulance: A special type of patient transport ambulance designed for
extremely obese patients equipped with the appropriate tools to move and manage these
patients.
–Rapid organ recovery Ambulance: It collects the bodies of people who have died
suddenly from heart attacks, accidents and other emergencies and try to preserve their
organs. New York City is launching a pilot program deploying one such ambulance with
a $1.5 million, three-year grant.

4.2. The 108 services

Dr. AP Ranga Rao is credited with first theorizing 108 ambulance services in India,
having spent 10 years working with the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain
learning about emergency systems.
EMRI was structured as a not-for-profit and continues to operate via public-private
partnerships created with the government of Indian states. EMRI services are provisioned
to the public free of charge. 85 to 90% of patients treated are the poorest people in India.
EMRI's ambulance system is financially supported by state governments
GVK EMRI's 27 dispatch centres receive 130,000 calls per day, to which GVK EMRI
emergency medical providers respond to 80,000 emergency calls and assist with 200
childbirths per day, claiming to save 800 lives daily.[19] GVK EMRI said its service
saved more than 1.5 million lives between 2005 and 2015, though no outside entity has
verified its claim.

In a study published in Health Affairs in 2016, research conducted in two Indian states
where GVK EMRI operates demonstrated their service helped reduce neonatal and infant
mortality.

Before the 108 service became operative, researchers at EMRI had estimated that 4
million Indians were dying every year because of insufficient emergency health services.
Of the 4 million deaths, around 60 per cent (2.4 million) were related to cardiac-related
emergencies, followed by 1,50,000 pregnancy-related deaths, 1,40,000 road accident
fatalities, respiratory distress, snake bites and suicide attempts, among other causes.

6. PROBLEMS OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM
India has an adequate number of ambulances, yet there is lack of service because of
transportation or traffic problems and other reasons do exist.

The major complaint by these services were non-prioritizing or ignorance of the importance of
ambulances by the government and the citizens. According to a recent survey 27% of the deaths
happen due to the ambulance not reaching the hospital.
The Transportation mode that has the most contribution is Hired transport, but it takes double the
time of 108 Ambulance!!
The major complaint by these services were non-prioritizing or ignorance of the importance of
ambulances by the government and the citizens. According to a recent survey 27% of the deaths
happen due to the ambulance not reaching the hospital.

MAJOR COMPLAINTS/LOOPHOLES OF THE CURRENT AMBULANCE SYSTEM

● No prioritization of Ambulance Systems

● No Separate Signal creation to alert the passersby that there is an emergency vehicle
nearby
● Improper education/tests given to people with driving licenses(this is one of the main
reasons because majority of the people do not let these vehicles through the traffic).
● No proper awareness is spread.
● In most of the papers a camera module is used but the main problem with camera
modules is during bad weather the camera lens gets blocked and the system will then fail
to execute and perform the operation it usually does.
● There is no system which alerts the traffic cops that an emergency vehicle is headed
towards their way to clear the traffic.
● 108 is not given much appreciation.
7. PROPOSED WORK
7.1 TECHNOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS

The provider operates the prevailing call centre at State Institute of Health
and Family Welfare with necessary software. The computer software would
provide for computer telephony integration with ability to log calls with
geographical information systems. All the ambulances are supervised with
the assistance of GPS maintained by the provider.
After attending the patient, the Emergency Medical Technician would
measure the need for ambulance transport. In case no Emergency occurs, it
is informed by the call centre for further instructions, and proceed according
to instructions of the call centre.
In case only first aid or some basic support is required, it is provided on the
spot and after informing the call centre ambulance would move back to the
base location as specified by the call centre.

In case of mass casualties, and if there is need of added ambulances, if any

other supplies are needed to attend to the emergency, including help from
police and fire agencies, the same is communicated to the call centre.
In case of Emergency, Emergency Medical Technician evaluates the type of
emergency and seriousness, and transport the patient to the closest
appropriate medical facility, pre hospital care is provided en-route. If
necessary, the EMT interacts with the Emergency Response Centre
Physician for guidance. Pre hospital care record is maintained which
includes details of drugs and disposables consumed and which need to be
replenished. The time or receipt of call, time of arrival at the incident location,
time started towards hospital and time when reached the hospital would be
captured either manually or automatically in log register or software.

8. METHODOLOGY

The core idea of this project is to reduce the time in which an ambulance reaches a patient and brings him
back to a hospital. This project works on a very simple module available on every smartphone today ,i.e ,
GPS. By using this inbuilt technology we can determine the shortest possible route the ambulance has to
take to and from the patient at the same time this technology can be used to make smart traffic lights which
will have a gps module embedded in them and using the gps of ambulance and traffic signal there can be a
communication link between these two bodies and the traffic signal would get to know from which direction
the ambulance is coming and to which direction does it wish to go . So when a traffic signal senses an
ambulance approaching it within 1km of radius it will start communicating with the app on the ambulance
and start clearing traffic for the ambulance.
This is our approach to the problem.
9. VALIDATED LEARNING / FEEDBACK
To get feedback we have made a survey to get opinions from the public and framed questions
that comply with the aim of the project.
The survey was in the form of google forms which was circulated to people. The questionnaire
comprised of the following kind of the questions:-
1. Open ended questions
2. Close ended questions
3. Linkart Scale question
These kinds of questions were included to get a thorough knowledge of what the people think
about the existing system, about our proposed projects and any feedbacks that they wanted to
give us.
Suggestions:

· Well its good but, its kinda hard to implement in India.. Nobody will like a change in current system...
Its likely hospitals won't imply this system because every hospital will like to direct casualties to their own
and wont let to other. I would like all ambulance services to be Liberal and be unanimously controlled by a
system of people who have been elected by the government to manage hospital overflow there is a lot
thought process but its kinda good

· As of now i have no suggestions to give but i really love your idea and i hope you guys
keep developing it and create a prototype that gets selected and appreciated! All the best.

· Nice thought hope you look into the matter the idea of user friendliness and GUI of the
App

· Hope to see it in the app store soon

· It's a crazy idea and can save a lot of lives !!!

· Instead of mobile app, web app will be efficient

What we can understand from this survey is that there is an actual demand for a better ambulance
management system, while people are willing are report accidents there is a difference of opinion
with installing an application for the sole purpose of carrying out the task. We have learnt that
this project carries real value in the society and can be approached.

We have researched and configured the cost analysis considering all the expenditure and divided
a nominal amount to make the project affordable.

11. MARKETING STRATEGY

Developing a product is a task, however the real task is to ensure that the product reaches it’s
right audience.
A marketing strategy or tactic allows you to build the best chances for success for your product.
That is because marketing planning starts with market analysis, taking the optimal target client
into account, what the competitor is doing and the patterns on the horizon.
Thus, we have come up with a suitable marketing strategy for our product.
Since our product is not exactly for personal use , but for the use and betterment of the
community at large thus person-to-person advertising won't make much sense.

EMAIL MARKETING (for primary target audience): In today’s time every

organisation uses the internet services for some reason and in some way or the other. Since our product
concerns with the healthcare facilities pertaining to ambulances and usage of the roads, the following are
our main target audience: -

1. Local Government Authority

2. Traffic Police
3. Hospitals/Healthcare Providers

Thus to communicate our product to the above mentioned people we shall be making use
of the email marketing strategy. Thus we will be sending our information about our
product in a formal manner to the audience in the form of an official mail.

This technique is highly effective for our product as most of the above mentioned
institutes use emails as their formal mode of communication. Emails at these institutions
are checked on a very regular basis and thus chances of them wanting to be a part of this
initiative would be higher.

CLOSE RANGE MARKETING (CRM) (for secondary consumers): The

people who will be able to use our product after its installation in times of distress are our
secondary audience. It is important for them to know all about this service so that they can very
swiftly report an accident or emergency as and when they witness it.
How CRM works is that it will make use of the bluetooth/wifi facility to promote the
product amongst the people who are in the proximity. This way as and when people enter
an area where our product is in use they can be informed about using our service in times
of need.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING(for secondary consumers) : Today almost

every person is registered to one or the other social media sites and this proves to be a great advantage for
spreading a word. We can publisize about our product and how to utilize it on various social media
platforms( Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc). The reach of the post can be increased by tagging appropriate
and known people and using the right kind of hashtags.

12. CONCLUSION
In this work, we presented a Navigation & path making application for ambulance services. The
main challenges associated with traffic congestion and emergency vehicles were discussed and an
adaptive solution was presented.

We have modeled a design for the urban population, as the traffic density is high in these areas the
proposed system is more likely useful in these areas. Many of us have witnessed an ambulance
being stuck in traffic, its not because the people in front of the road knowingly block the ambulance
path. Due to lack of knowledge about an ambulance is there way in the back of them.

For these kinds of situations this system is helpful as it adds another traffic signal to existing
traffic lights, which is an emergency light. It activates as soon as the ambulance driver enter the
details according to the patient condition the path to hospital is being set by using shortest path
algorithms, which also sends the emergency details to the hospital so the will prepare for respective
emergency, as we use the google maps api for the real-time traffic information according to the
data the traffic emergency signal is activated before the arrival of the ambulance.

Thus, with the proposed system we will be able to save the lives of people who are dying on their
way to hospital due to the delay in time to reach the hospitals for treatment.

FUTURE WORK: Our future works include extension of the system for various other
emergency services like:-

1. Fire stations
2. Police stations
3. Women’s/children helplines
4. Publish this work as a research paper
