Unit 3 Lab Questions

The document contains questions about various astronomical objects including: - UY Scuti and J0523, explaining how they differ in mass and location. - J1311 (the Black Widow Pulsar) and how it will eventually destroy its companion star through radiation emitted from its poles. - How scientists determined SM0313 is the oldest star discovered based on its size, color and isolation from other stars. - The characteristics of HV2112 that make it a candidate for a Thorne-Zytkow object based on its element composition. - How a star's mass determines its lifespan and fuel consumption rate.

Unit Three: Lab Questions

Five Amazing Stars

Explain how UY Scuti and J0523 are different.
- Because they’re far from each other and the J0523 has lower mass then the UY which
is a red dwarf.
Why will J1311 (the Black Widow Pulsar) eventually find itself
without its companion star? How will this happen?
- Because the pulsar is slowly destroying its companion. J1311 is a fast spinning
neutron star, which means it emits strong beams of radiation from it's poles. As the
beam of the pulsar sweeps across the surface of the companion star, it heats it up and
blows its material outward into space, thus decreasing its mass. As the pulsar continues
sweeping its beam across the brown dwarf, it will continue to blow its material away,
which eventually will evaporate the whole companion out of existence, thus leaving the
pulsar without a companion star.

How did scientists determine SM0313 is the oldest star ever

discovered?

- I think it has to do with how old it looks, because a star starts off as a baby little star, a
different color and size. its also in a nursery with a lot of other stars, which is called a
nebula. as the stars grow older and larger, they change color and drift apart. the
scientists must've seen that the star has a totally different color from the baby ones, way
brighter and much larger, also seeing that stars grow apart, it has not really many stars
living around it for miles and miles. they must've guessed that it was probably really old.

What characteristics of HV2112 make it the best candidate to be

classified as a Thorne-Zytkow object?
- The star was thought to contain unusually high levels of the element’s lithium,
molybdenum and rubidium that are expected only to be produced by TZOs.
Low Mass Stars: Crash Course Astronomy #39
How does a star's mass determine its lifespan?
- The mass of a star determines both its surface temperature and its luminosity. A star's
mass is how much fuel it has, and its luminosity is what determines how fast the star
consumes its fuel. Therefore, the higher the mass, the higher the luminosity and
consumption rate which decreases its lifespan.
Discuss the characteristics of cool red dwarf stars, including their
mass and age.
- Red dwarfs include the smallest stars commonly weighing between 0.075 to 0.50
percent the mass of the sun, their small size means they burn at a slower rate meaning
a dwarf star is to long exceed the life of the universe, their reduced mass also means
their surface is very cool
Discuss the correlation or connection between stars with a higher
mass and the amount of fuel they have to work with.

- Larger stars have a higher amount of fuel in order to keep the process of nuclear
fusion going.
How old is the sun and since it's birth, how has the sun changed?
- The present age of the Sun is 4.6 billion years old. It will live for about 5.4 billion years
more. Initially, the Sun was majorly composed of Hydrogen. Current composition of the
Sun is 70% hydrogen, 28% Helium and 2% heavier elements. Thus, the composition
has changed since birth due to nuclear fusion process in the core.
During its lifespan, what characteristics of the sun will change?
- During its lifespan, the sun's core would keep contracting and heating up.
The temperature will keep increasing to the point where the temperature outside the
core will get to hydrogen fusion temperatures.
The sun will grow in surface and eventually became the Red Giant
