As part of the Design Thinking process, IDEATION is the approach in which you
concentrate on idea generation through ideation sessions, building prototypes and
getting innovative solutions into the hands of your users and to use creativity and
innovation in order to develop solutions.
IDEATION helps you to challenge assumptions, think outside the box, and explore
unfamiliar territory.
IDEATION is your chance to combine the understanding you have of the problem
space and people you are designing for with your imagination to generate solution concepts.
Ideation Will Help You:
1. Ask the right questions and innovate with a strong focus on your users, their
needs, and your insights about them.
2. Step beyond the obvious solutions and therefore increase the innovation
potential of your solution.
3. Bring together perspectives and strengths of your team members.
4. Uncover unexpected areas of innovation.
5. Create volume and variety in your innovation options.
6. Get obvious solutions out of your heads, and drive your tem beyond them.
Characteristics Required for Successful Ideation
Ideation requires purposefully adopting certain characteristics, whether they are
natural or whether they need to be encouraged and learnt. Regardless of one’s personality
or way of thinking, we tend to use the same recipes for solving problems.

The analogy technique compares your situation – or design challenge – to

Advertising to customers is like cooking a meal
People anticipate food more if they can smell something nice. Can we put a
smell (or other distinctive feeling) on our product which serves no purpose
except to recognize the upcoming excitement?
2. Bodystorming
The bodystorming technique gets you to physically experience a situation in order
to spark new ideas. compares your situation – or design challenge – to something you
are familiar with, enabling you to look at the problem in new light and consider possible
solutions.
How does it work?
You set up a physical experience resembling the problem you are trying to
solve, using people, props, or a digital prototype. Based on your own
interactions with, and reactions to, this environment, it may be easier to
come up with ideas.
3. Brainstorming
Brainstorming is one of the oldest tricks when it comes to generating new ideas as
a group. In a brainstorming session, you verbally bounce ideas off of each in the hopes of
finding a blended solution.

As we know, challenging assumptions is crucial to breaking conventional thought
patterns and coming up with new ideas. A popular ideation technique is to come up with
a number of assumptions that are inherent to your design challenge.
How does it work?
As a group, you’ll then go through these assumptions and discuss whether
they are really true, or if they’re simply there because they’ve never been
questioned. In putting these assumptions to the test, you can determine
what characteristics are really necessary, or which solutions could be used
instead.
5. Reverse Thinking
Reverse thinking can be a fun way to flip the problem on its head and come up with
new ideas. The solutions you come up with for the reverse challenge can help you to
envision what the opposite might be, leading you closer to the solution you really need.
How does it work?
The question “how might we make our online courses more accessible?”
could be changed to “how can we make it as difficult as possible for users to
take our online courses?’
When deciding which ideation techniques to use, think about the nature of your
design problem, as well as the people taking in the ideation session. It’s important to choose
techniques which are suitable for the group size. At the same time, consider which methods are
most likely to put your participants at ease and elicit the best response among this particular
group of people.
