Snack Attack Lab
All organic materials are classified into four main categories (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids).
The foods you eat provide your body with these biomolecules. We can use food labels to see how much of
these biomolecules are in our snacks.
Part One: Use the snacks you have at home to fill in the chart below. Read the task, type the name of the food,
fill in the serving size information, and insert a picture of the food label.

Part Two: You are working for the school district to determine the best snack to provide students with
on SOL (standards of learning) test days. Think about the functions of biomolecules and which
biomolecules students may need more or less of while taking the SOL test. You can use a snack that
you found in part one of this assignment, or a different snack. Fill in the nutritional chart to justify your
answer.
Nutritional Chart
Evidence:
1. Fill in the data table using the food label.
2. Create pie chart for one serving.

Claim
1. Write a complete sentence to claim which snack you think is the best. For example, “The
best SOL test day snack for students is ________ “
The best SOL test day snack for students among the the snacks above is the nutrient bar.
Reasoning
1. Explain why you think this snack is the best. Connect your knowledge of biomolecules to the
data table and pie chart in the evidence section.
The nutrient bar is the best snack for the SOL test because it contains the most amount of
carbohydrates (see pie chart). Carbohydrates are used for long-term energy which is beneficial to
a long test. The other biomolecules will not help out as much. Proteins help repair tissues and build
cell membrane and lipids are used for short-term energy but won’t do anything while taking a long
test such as the SOL. The nutrient bar is the most useful because it has a lot of carbohydrates which
is used for long-term energy.
