COURSE DESCRIPTION
Online classes supplement or substitute the face-to-face interaction in an educational
setting. Intensive researches and discussion have been conducted on the principles and strategies of teaching and learning online classes. Through Moodle, this course will provide the students with the hands-on experience in an online environment. Furthermore, this course seeks to equip educators with the knowledge and skills on designing their online classes for the coming school year.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Appreciate and understand the unique opportunities and challenges offered by e-
learning. 1.1 Define e-learning and other terminologies used in the field. 1.2 Describe current global trends in e-learning. 1.3 Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of online learning. 1.4 develop an online learning plan. 1.5 Explain the role of e-learning in the Gospel Commission. 1.6 Appreciate the importance of understanding e-learning in today’s schools
2. Examine the different ways of designing online instruction
2.1. Identify the basic assumptions of instructional design. 2.2. Discuss the strategies that constitute instructional design theories. 2.3. Explain the different instructional design theories. 2.4. Describe the steps in developing an online and blended course. 2.5. Discover faith-integrated and mission oriented online course designs. 2.6. Develop an online course module utilizing an instructional design for optimal learning. COURSE REQUIREMENT
A. Participation in Class Activities (20%)
Active participation in all the learning activities of this course is encouraged, with collegial contribution and constructive feedback figuring as important elements in this course. Be sure to post your ideas in the forum and interact with other students in the class.
B. Creation Output One of the stages in your learning journey is the Create. At this stage, you have to develop plans in relation to your online class. Every lesson you will have one creation output. a. Chunking Content (10%) Your first output of this class is on chunking your online content. In this activity you will identify the sequence of your topic of your choice and their corresponding critical elements. As you chunk your content, you have to consider the following questions: 1. How many weeks is your course or grading period? 2. What are the competencies you will cover? 3. How many modules for each topic? 4. What are the critical components of each module? The format is given in a doc file. Just complete five topics in a grading period/semester. b. Instructional Planning (30%) After identifying important lessons and competencies, the next output is your instructional plan. You have to develop your plan following the D’SPAC framework. A format will be given in doc file.
C. Online Course Development Project (30%)
You will undertake a personal online class project which you are expected to develop and submit progressively on the indicated dates. As this is an intensive class, only one unit of a fully online course is expected to be completed by the end of the course.
The project content and organization will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1) mission and objectives, 2) course content, 3) instructional design, 4) assessment, and 5) technology use.
D. Online Course Review Reports (10%)
A vital characteristic of this course is the development of a critical eye or sensitivity to what constitutes a quality online course. You will be given an opportunity to review online course modules of your classmates. It is intended that each report will be useful in refining the recipient’s developed project. These reports will be evaluated in terms of organization, comprehensiveness, usefulness, insights gained, and the effective communication of relevant principles. EVALUATION RUBRICS
