Adopting new technologies for sustainable supply chain
Research gap:
Of all the research articles selected for literature review, it was found that the benefits of
sustainable supply chain are well stated but they lack practical research of the technologies being
adopted and used across the industries. The conclusions are made through stochastic models, meta-
analysis or fuzzy systems.
Constructs:
The main drivers concerning manufacturers’ investment in logistics and supply chain management
are to achieve real-time product visibility, faster innovation and lower cost to serve as well as an
improvement in planning.
Matt et al. evaluate digital transformation by investigating the use of technologies, changes in value
creation, structural changes and financial aspects. They stress that DT strategies need to bridge
operational and functional strategies and therefore also impact leadership.
Böck and Lange identified seven leadership skills, which are perceived as necessary by employees for
DT: openness, willingness to fail, adaptability, empathy, motivation, communication, and
technological understanding. DTT are an important building block of DT; their implementation and
use is mainly driven by economical aspects.
The social and environmental dimensions of DT in logistics and supply chain management are
expected to have less impact than the economical dimension but yet DT is expected to bring
important social and environmental benefits by increasing efficiency and cutting down energy
consumption and emissions. Supply chain practitioners state that sustainability in all its dimensions
as a trend is constantly growing in importance both driven from customers as well as from the public
sector.

Hypothesis:
H1: a technology supplier for transport management offering a platform solution for supply chain
transparency. The considered technologies are information and communication technologies for
infrastructure, auto-ID technologies to generate data, the cloud for connecting supply chain partners
via monitoring applications as well as estimated time of arrival and a mobile device to generate data,
visualize information and interact between supply chain partners. This platform solution also
provides additional services such as increasing full truck load optimization.
H2: a visibility solution for outbound transportation based on cloud technology. It is similar to case
H1 but only with a focus on outbound transport and creating visibility.
H3: evaluation of automatic guided vehicles based on the automation technology of the vehicles,
cloud for data storage and processing as well as analytics for route optimization. The automatic
guided vehicles are used in in-house transport to supply material and secure the running of
production lines.

Research questions:
What is the importance of social and environmental sustainability for the deployment of DTT?
What are impacts of DTT on the social and environmental dimension of manufacturers’ supply
chains?
How do practitioners link their technology deployment to their overall DT strategy?
