Lab Title Chemistry - Flame Test Lab

This lab report summarizes a flame test experiment where five unknown chloride salts were tested to identify them based on the characteristic color produced when placed in a flame. The procedure involved using Q-tips to place each salt above a Bunsen burner flame and observing the distinct colors. Calculations were shown to determine wavelengths and frequencies from given values. The unknown salts were identified as copper, barium, potassium, sodium, and strontium based on the observed colors matching a provided characteristic color chart. The conclusion stated that the flame test allowed identification of the chloride salts through their unique color reactions when placed in a flame.

Lab title: Chemistry- Flame Test Lab

Date of Experiment: December 19, 2019

Leigha Schweiger
Lab partner name: Beverly L
I. Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to see the different colors of the five unknown chloride salts
when put to a flame. The different chloride salts reacts to it in different ways depending on what
it was.
II. Procedure:
A graduated cylinder, obtain approximately 20 mL of distilled water and then transfer it to
the 250 mL beaker. Then used a microspatula and took a small scoop of each of the five
unknown chloride salts and places it on a paper towel. Then the Bunsen burner was set up and
turned on. Had to get five Q-tips swabs wet them and dip each one in each of the five unknown
chloride salts. Then separately place the q-tip swabs above the Bunsen burner a little bit in the
flame. Observe the characteristic color given off of each of them. Then discard the swab in the
red trash can.
III. Material:
● Five unknown chloride salts
● Distilled water
IV. Equipment:
● 100 mL graduated cylinder
● 250 mL beaker
● Bunsen burner + gas delivery tubing
● Microspatula
● Paper towels
● Q-tips cotton swabs
V. Data:
No measurements
VI. Calculations:
1. What is the wavelength, in nanometers, of a photon of radiation with a frequency of 5.79
x 10^14 Hertz (Hz)?

3.00 x 10^8 m 1s 1 x 10^9 nm = 518 nm

1s 5.79 x 10^14 1m

2. What is the frequency, in Hertz (Hz.), of a photon of radiation with a wavelength of 1.00 x
10^-3 nm?

3.00 x 10^8 m 1 1 x10^9 nm = 3 x 10^20 Hertz

1s 1.00 x 10^-3 nm 1m
3. A radar beam has a frequency of 5.05 x 10^11 Hertz (Hz.), What is the energy, in Joules
(J), of the radar beam?

6.626 x 10^-34 J x s 5.05 x 10^11 = 3.34613 x 10^-22 J = 3.35 x 10^-22 J

VII. Questions
1. Identify the unknown chloride salts using the lab observations and the given
characteristic color chart.

Unknown number Characteristic color Identity

3 Blue / green Copper

4 Yellow / green Barium

1 Violet Potassium

2 Orange / yellow Sodium

5 red Strontium

2. What type of proportion exists between and v?

3. What graph shape for versus v?

Inverse
4. What type of proportion exists for E and v?

5. What graph shape for E versus v?

Direct

VIII. Conclusion
In conclusion, when the five chloride salts were put to the flames it showed the different colors
that go to certain chloride salts. So when the color of the flame that showed it was able to
identify the unknown chloride salt by the color that showed up when put to the flame. Also had
to figure out the wavelengths and frequencies. I learned that some things have a certain color to
them that help you identify what it is. Also of each chloride salt it does not need much of it to tell
what it is.
