Reflection: Speaking Our Truth Chapter Four
Speaking our Truth has broadened my perspective towards the history within Canada.
Indigenous children were taken away from their homes and placed in environments that
supressed their cultural beliefs and identity. This not only affected the children that were subject
to this removal, it created intergenerational trauma. When someone asks me where I am from, I
associate it with the physical place I grew up and the family and culture that I had around me.
Environment can influence who we are as people, which impacts how we see the world. Reading
personal experiences from indigenous individuals has brought light to how important
reconciliation is.
In chapter four of Speaking Our Truth it discusses how a person’s view on reconciliation
can change and develop over time. This statement resonated with me, as it is a powerful
reminder that reconciliation is ongoing. This book has highlighted how vital it is to share
factually correct information about indigenous culture and history, and be open to diversity. I
believe it is important to help foster a culturally rich classroom that is safe and welcoming.
Indigenous language rights were one of the areas that were addressed in the 94 Call to Action.
Allowing children to utilize their language and providing them with opportunities for them to
teach their peers words or phrases, would create a stronger classroom community.
After reading about the Seven Sacred Teachings, I realized how closely these teachings
highlighted aspects within my life. When the writer compared knowledge and wisdom by
stating, “knowledge can be learned, wisdom comes from lived experiences,” was impactful and
significant. I believe that both aspects are important, however, experiences help shape who we
are as individuals. Being able to gain experience teaching students provides me with insight into
what kind of teacher I want to become. Also, it is an opportunity for me to develop strategies and
techniques within the classroom. Respect and love were the sacred teachings that resonated most
for me. If we love and respect what is in our life, such as ourselves, others, and the environment,
it will influence our ability to express the other sacred teachings. Being able to role model
positive behaviours, such as respect, and offering a safe space to learn is essential in creating a
welcoming classroom atmosphere.
