Pre-Colonial Period
BC - 1564
- oral in nature and is full of lessons and ideas about life, its blessings, and
its consequences
- showcases our rich past through oral literature, folk songs, and folk tales
Spanish Colonization Period
1565 - 1863
- literature in this period may be classified as religious prose and poetry and
secular prose and poetry
- uses Spanish as the medium of communication
Nationalistic/Propaganda and Revolutionary Period
1864 - 1896
- planted seeds of nationalism in Filipinos
- language shifted from Spanish to Tagalog
- addressed the masses instead of the intelligentsia or intellectuals who
form an artisitic, social or political vanguard or elite
American Colonial Period
1910 - 1945
- free verse (in poetry), the modern short story and the critical essay were
introduced
- use of English alongside Filipino was practiced
- Has two periods:
Period of Apprenticeship (1910-1930)
- Filipino writers imitated English and American models
- poems written during this period were amateurish and mushy
Period of Emergence (1920-1930)
- this period was highly influenced by Western literary like Romanticism
and Realism
