Past Week’s Review
Growing hearts and minds!
We hope you and your family had a wonderful relaxing Thanksgiving
break! We were so happy to be back together this week!
In Language Arts, during Reader’s Workshop, we continued learning about nonfiction
books! We know that a nonfiction book is informational; it tells us facts and information about a
particular topic. During Writer’s Workshop we continued our unit on informational books. Each
student continued writing his/her “Expert Book.” We learned a little about poetry this week. The
children worked on acrostic poems using their names. They really loved matching ideas about
themselves to the letters in their names.
In Spelling, we had our spelling test on words containing the (o) sound in the initial, and
medial position. The students were challenged by our two bonus words: December and Beth
Yeshurun, and they did a great job! The two irregular words this week included: put and who.
Please make sure that you are continuing to review these words with your children.
In Math, the children continued working with addition and subtraction within 20.
They practiced counting on, crossing out and working with word problems. We also began our unit
on shapes We learned about different shapes used to make 3d shapes. Lastly, please continue
to practice addition and subtraction MATH FACTS with your child every night! Flash cards
are a great way to reinforce the skill!
In Social Studies, in our Texas Studies Weekly, we read, “Thanksgiving Traditions” We
discussed voyage the Pilgrims took to America. We talked about the different customs they learned
when they arrived. The kids loved sharing the different holiday customs and traditions their families
have. In Scholastic News, we read, “A Vole in the Snow” We read about a vole which is a small
furry animal that lives all over the United States. We learned all about how they build their cozy
homes under the snow.
Last but not least, if there is one thing we can suggest or encourage for you to be doing at
home is to read with your child every night. This is a wonderful bonding time for you and your
child. Please make sure that you are also recording in your daily reading log what you are reading
at home and returning the reading logs to school on Monday’s. Please make sure that you are
reading for at least 15 minutes every day.
