History of the Profession

Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and
operation of machinery. Mechanical engineering emerged as a field during the Industrial
Revolution in Europe in the 18th century, however, its development can be traced back several
thousand years around the world. Then, during the Islamic Golden Age, a lot of things has been
made regarding mechanical design. One of the best examples is the book of Al-Jazari, written in
1206. Indeed, what we know today as mechanical engineering really started with the Industrial
Revolution with a growing demand for machinery in the latter part of the 18th century, with the
development of steam engines. Indeed, the evolution of mechanical engineering comes with the
development of tooling and machinery.

Daily Professional Tasks

Daily, Mechanical engineers confer with engineers or other personnel to implement
operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, or provide technical information. They
perform personnel functions, such as supervision of production workers, technicians,
technologists, or other engineers. Mechanical engineers also design power-producing
machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas
turbines, as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
Mechanical engineers design other machines inside buildings, such as elevators and
escalators. Other task they do is planning and designing tools, engines, machines, and other
mechanically functioning equipment. That’s some daily task.

Careers
Different careers in mechanical engineering is aerospace engineer, automotive engineer,
maintenance engineer, and cad technician. Aerospace engineers evaluate designs to see that
the products meet engineering principles. Automotive engineers are concerned with the
development of passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles or off-road vehicles. Cad
technicians work in an office environment with specialist software for the design and structure.
Maintenance engineers are responsible for the installation and maintenance. There are many
more jobs related to mechanical engineering but those are the ones I chose.
Education Requirements
The educational requirements for a mechanical engineer are a bachelor’s degree. To get
a bachelor’s degree you must attend college for four years encompassing 120 semester credits
or 40 college courses. If the college uses quarter systems rather than a semester system, you’ll
need to complete 180 quarter credits to earn a bachelor’s degree. Engineering is a vast field,
with a breadth of specializations that can feel daunting. Once students have sorted through the
offerings, however, the profession offers an array of career choices to best fit an individual’s
preferences and abilities. Entering the profession can be done via several educational
pathways, while advanced degree programs and certifications can boost earning power and
lead to job advancement.

Professional Requirements (licensures, etc.)

The professional requirements for a mechanical engineer are to have at least four years
of engineering experience. You also need to pass the exam for the engineering class you take in
college. Another thing is to have an additional eight years or more of satisfactory engineering
experience. Many states require that individuals teaching engineering must also be licensed.
Exemptions to state laws are under attack, and in the future, those in education, as well as
industry and government, may need to be licensed to practice. Also, licensure helps educators
prepare students for their future in engineering.

Earnings (match to different ‘Careers’ above)

Mechanical engineers made a median salary of $87,370. 25 percent of mechanical engineers
made $110,520 a year. The lowest paid was $69,410 in a year. The states and districts that pay
Mechanical Engineers the highest mean salary is Alaska. The salary in Alaska is $128,690.
Another state is New Mexico and they make $119,210 a year.

Well Known Companies

A well-known place is Massachusetts institute of technology. The School of Engineering is
a popular destination for MIT students and faculty. About 45 percent of all graduate students at
MIT, roughly 2,800 students, are enrolled in the School of Engineering, and about a third of all
faculty members teach at the School. Graduate students have 15 areas in which to earn
degrees, most of which are highly ranked.

There are close to 20 research centers on campus, which explore topics as varied as cancer
research, ocean engineering, and soldier nanotechnologies. Students with ideas for new
businesses can enter the $100K Entrepreneurship Competition for a chance to win start-up
money.
Professional Organizations
One professional organization for mechanical engineering is American society of mechanical
engineers. Another one is the society of women engineers which is only for women. Another one
is the American institute of chemical engineering. Another one is the institution of mechanical
engineers. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is an independent professional association
and learned society headquartered in London, United Kingdom, that represents mechanical
engineers and the engineering profession. The last one I have is the American society for
engineering education.

Well Know Projects

The first well known project I have is a pipe climbing robot. That is a robot designed to be able
to climb up pipes that you can’t get to and need to see. Another one is an Anti-riot drone with
tear gas. The drone is designed to keep people from rioting and destroying things by launching
tear gas at them. The final one I have is a mini hydraulic hand operated JIB crane. It is used to
carry things around the engineering shop that are heavy.

Current Job Openings

One job opening is in Kennesaw, GA and it’s called Selectek. It has an opening for a junior to
mid- level mechanical engineer. Another one is Part time faculty position in mechanical. In that
job you will teach other kids how to become a mechanical engineer. The last one is The Perillo
Group. They are looking for a mechanical engineer that will work full time.

Additional Information Slide #1 Famous Mechanical engineer

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American engineer and physicist. He was born in 1856 in Smiljan,
Croatia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time and died in 1943. Tesla's
father was a priest of the Serbian Orthodox church, and his mother ran the family farm. Tesla
was seven years old when his brother Daniel died in a riding accident. This event triggered the
first signs of mental illness that became more severe as Tesla reached adulthood. Tesla's
innovative research throughout his life led to an enduring legacy in modern technology and
fascination with the man himself.

Additional Information Slide #2 Different mechanics and what they do.

Mechanical engineers are required to study statics and dynamics. Fluid mechanics deal with civil,
chemical, and aerospace. Thermodynamics are important to chemical and aerospace engineers. Heat
transfer is critical to electric and chemical engineers. Control engineering is important to electrical,
computer, chemical engineering, and a field in and of itself. Thermal systems and power plant design
linear systems and linear dynamics.
