December Bird Quiz Answers
1. Nuthatches moves headfirst down branches and tree trunks. (The Sibley Guide to Birds
by David Sibley)
2. The Common Grackle is larger than a Robin. They have iridescent, blue-purple head
feathers and a long tail. Grackles have black beaks and a pale yellow eye.The European
Starling is smaller than a Robin, has greenish-black, oily-looking plumage in the
summer, a short tail, yellow beak and a dark eye. In the winter the European Starling’s
plumage is dark, speckled with small white dots. (The Sibley Guide to Birds by David
Sibley)
3. Turkey Vultures are maximizing their time in the air by using thermals, warm air that
rises off land and buildings, allowing them to soar instead of flapping their wings. This
allows them to maximize the time they spend in the air without using as much energy.
Hawks, eagles, and a few other species will do the same (National Audubon, 2017)
4. Northern Bobwhite, Killdeer, Whip-poor-will, Eastern Wood Pewee, Willet, Eastern
Phoebe, Blue Jay (one of its calls), Dickcissel … perhaps you thought of more!
