Little Known Virginia History:

Lord Dunmore’s War
In 1774 , the British colony of Virginia stretched from the Chesapeake
Bay to modern - day Ohio and included what is now West Virginia and
Kentucky . Following the French and Indian War that ended in 1763 ,
English colonists such as Daniel Boone attempted to settle in this wild land
that had been surveyed by a young George Washington . The local
Shawnee tribes ( who had sided with the losing French ) abhorred treaties
that had taken away their southern hunting grounds , leading to violent
conflicts along the frontier . Boone’s eldest son James was captured and
tortured to death as a warning , causing Boone to turn back , but he would
later famously return to settle Kentucky . Colonists then murdered family
members of the powerful chief Logan who took his revenge by killing
isolated settlers . The tensions escalated to full blown frontier
War in 1774 as Lord Dunmore (the colonial governor in Williamsburg )
John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore organized an elite militia force to “ pacify the hostile Indian war bands ” .
The governor led one group to Fort Pitt ; a second group under Colonel
Colonial Crossings of Andrew Lewis was to meet him and proceed to burn Shawnee villages in
Williamsburg Ohio. Shawnees under Chief Cornstalk surprised Lewis at Point Pleasant
A Land’or Resort: ( WV ) and a battle ensued , with the militia driving the Shawnee
200 English Garden Way back across the Ohio River to their Scioto River camps . The militia then
Williamsburg, VA 23188 burned many Shawnee villages , causing Logan and other chiefs to sign a
(757) 941-1540 peace treaty . This ended the war , but the Shawnee then attacked

continued to harass western colonial movement for years to come .
