Unlike the Agrikan church, which is very fragmented, the Laranian church
has two orders based along geographical regions and the separate
circumstances that brought them into being. Even so, if it was not for the
tenants of chivalry and honor that the church espouses it is quite possible that
the internal disputes of both orders would have split them into many separate
orders long ago.
The hierarchy section will detail the command structure of Laranian fighting

HISTORICAL AND RELIGIOUS CONTEXT

The Laranian religion is one that fosters a feudal society in its beliefs and
organization. HârnMaster Religion has the following to say about the fighting
orders of the Goddess Larani:

The Laranian Church’s Mission

The same document has the following about the mission of the church:
Theological Mission
The modern church of Larani views feudalism as a pact between defender
and servitor and strives to maintain its ideal. These include codes of behavior
(chivalry) and duty (honor). Prior to feudalism, the religion existed to formalize
behavior between warring tribes.
Social Mission
The church offers a source of chivalry, honor and salvation to those whose
lives are filled with duties. Laranians have traditionally come from the feudal
nobility but muster growing numbers from wealthy freemen, especially Heralds,
Ostlers, Weaponcrafters and Yeomen, occupations associated with the nobility
and war.
The enmity between Larani and Agrik, the evil god of war, dominates the
external relations of the church. Laranians, like Agrikans, view each other as
mortal enemies on sight and this is a prejudice difficult to overcome.
The priesthood stands separate from the knights of Laranian fighting orders.
Although most clerics have some martial skill, it is the duty of the laity to
champion the cause while the priesthood serves as the conscience of the
church.

LARANIAN FIGHTING ORDERS 2
The Laranian Code Because of these beliefs and missions belonging
to the Laranian church its fighting orders are

properly, to contest for the right reasons and to do battle with honor. Those
who follow Larani must be brave, compassionate and honorable.
Societal order is an ideal for the chivalric knight. He is the guardian of the
culture. He is motivated by duty to his vassals and servants as well as to his
lawful superiors and his clan. Laranianism works best in feudal societies, for
these are, founded on obligation and privilege.
The code recognizes the possibility of conflicts of right against right. Hence,
it is possible for followers of Larani to find themselves on opposite sides in a
war. Their duty is to strive for victory in accordance with their feudal (or
societal) obligations, but they are ever bound to fight "fairly". In battle, quarter
may be offered and accepted with honor. If one's opponent is evil, quarter
should be offered to him, but not accepted from him.
Tournaments are occasions for Laranian knights to champion a lady,
organization or cause and bring her/it honor by competing. Tournaments may
consist of jousting between pairs of knights to determine the most proficient.
The oldest tourneys are battles between (often large) teams/orders of knights.

HIERARCHY
The Command Structure:
Like their parent clerical organizations, the fighting orders are composed of
a hierarchal command structure as follows.
Chabla (Grandmaster)
The commander of a fighting order; his duties include liaison with the
clerical grandmaster in addition to military organization and administration.
Although the office is seldom filled by a priest, it is by no means unheard of.
Either way the grandmaster is well schooled in ritual and may serve as a "lay-
priest" to his command. Some orders may even appoint a secular lord as
grandmaster as a political expediency. If this is done the position become more
ceremonial with one or more deputies doing the actual work. The Chabla is
usually appointed by the clerical grandmaster of the sponsoring order.
Reblena (Commander)
The reblena's duties vary considerably. Many are commanders of a single
chapter house or independent unit. Others serve as deputies to the Chabla, and
others fill administrative roles within the order. Most Reblena are usually of
noble birth.
Melana (Knight)
A member of noble birth, these individuals rank below the officers
mentioned above and above the commonality. Many are members in name but
serve only at need; many having their own estates to support them.

LARANIAN FIGHTING ORDERS 3
Erana (Wandering Knight)
A knight who, by request, has temporarily left the chapter houses of his
order to travel either for a specific or undefined purposes. The concepts of the
Chivalric Code frequently results in Laranian knights undertaking quests or
pilgrimages. An Erana who has not undertaken a specific duty is often in search
of a task to try his skills and honor.
Meken (Soldier)
These are soldiers of the order of simple birth. There are also low ranking
officers, the equivalents of corporals and sergeants, but most high officers in the
Laranian fighting orders are noble. It is very rare for a commoner to rise in rank;
the Chivalric Code and Tirithor are used as examples to show the "Holy
Ordering of Man's Estate" and keep Mekens from resenting their station.

The Order’s Estates:

The clerical orders have their temples, abbeys and supporting manors and
likewise the fighting order also has its own landed endowments.
Castles
A large fortified building or group of buildings with thick walls, usually
dominating the surrounding country; it served the twofold function of residence
and fortress. Most castles will have a square donjon, or keep, was set against the
strong outer walls of masonry; the entrance was protected by a double gate, two
flanking round towers, and advanced earthworks. The place enclosed by the
outer circuit of walls was usually divided into two courts, or baileys, by a
palisade. Subterranean passages made detection of underground forays easy.
In general, the castle was planned for security; the living quarters were
rude, poorly lighted, and without provisions for comfort. Typically, the keep
contained the living quarters of the lord and his family, the rooms of state, and
the prison cells. Two independent systems of walls, each a fortress in itself,
extended around the keep; the sections of the walls were flanked by towers,
usually round, and the principal entrance was protected by strong gate towers,
the massive gateway, with its portcullis and drawbridge, and the barbican, or
advanced outwork. The defenders operated from galleries at the tops of walls
and from the flat roofs of towers, whose battlements were provided with
recesses with flaring sides, called embrasures, and openings, or machicolations,
for shooting and dropping missiles on the attackers. The fully developed castle
was thus marked by successive series of defenses; the fall of the outer works did
not necessarily mean the loss of the entire castle.
Since a castle is extremely expensive to build they are normally constructed
in regions where unrest may be expected, such as frontiers or rebellious
provinces, although the conditions prompting their construction may have long
vanished. Since a castle is such a strong symbol of strength most lords would be
hesitant to hand one over to anyone but the most trusted or retainers.
Therefore, few orders hold such a structure; however, the ones that do, have
been awarded castles guarding regions prone to constant incursions and hostile
attacks. Most keeps will be supported by 10-20 manors; the role of these
manors being to supply the garrison with supplies and additional man-power.
Castles belonging to an order will have a normal garrison of two full chapters; a
castle guarding a hostile region may have double this.

if the order has one under its control. The chapter house is the command center
for all members of the order within a specific area and also acts as a collection
point for proceeds gathered from outlying subordinate manors and/or granges.
The chapter houses in this category are normally commanded by a senior
Reblena and house a full chapter of troops. The troops assigned to these
chapters patrol trade and or pilgrim routes, provide protection for religious
and/or political leaders, and act as concentration points for local defense. Some
of these establishments may even have training facilities for new recruits. The
above names are used to identify a chapter house used mainly in offensive
matters.
Shield Chapters
Unlike the chapters mentioned above, the shield chapters are rarely
assigned their own chapter house with its associated lands and village. These
chapters are the official bodyguard detachments for the senior prelates of the
Larani and possibly Peoni churches. It is common practice for shield chapters to
be headquartered at the prelate’s primary residence and to travel with him
throughout the year. However, not all prelates, abbeys or temples have a shield
chapter assigned to them. Most of these institutions will receive their protection
from nearby chapter houses of the type described above or following this entry.
Other Chapter Houses (Commandery)
Like the above chapter house, these are founded upon rural manors but are
subordinate to the chapter houses above. They too are commanded by a
Reblena but house a half-strength chapter instead. Their mission is very similar
to that of the full chapter giving the order additional manpower in regions where
they have the lands but not enough brothers to fill a full chapter.
Granges (Manor Chapters)
A grange is a support manor run by a retired Melana or senior Meken.
Unlike the chapter house above, they have only a few members on hand to
oversee the agricultural operations of the facility. A grange has two primary
functions: one is to provide their mother houses with provisions and the other is
to act as a revenue generator for the order.

LARANIAN FIGHTING ORDERS 9
THE HÂRNIC ORDERS
Order of the Lady of Paladins
The fighting order sponsored by the order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow.
Its original patron was King Poleryn who founded the order in 575. Its founding
was partly in response to the bloody turmoil that was then occurring in western
Hârn. The Lady of Paladins holds the keeps of Cundras and Fosumo in
Melderyn. For the last twenty years the order has been acting with greater and
greater autonomy and not always in the "ideal" spirit of the faith. Knights of the
order are currently engaged in the subjugation of Solora and "crusading" patrols
are often found there. There have been disturbing reports of the order's
activities against the Solori tribesmen bringing concern to both the Hârnic
primate and the pontiff. However, to date no effective action has been taken
against the order. The Chabla is Sir Enyel Trenoul; a shrewd and stubborn man
of forty-eight. Politically the order is split into two main factions within the
kingdom of Melderyn, those who support the Chabla and those who support the
clerics. Not surprisingly this divide corresponds with the shield chapters
supporting the clerics and their agenda and the sword chapters and their
subordinate manors supporting Chabla and his agenda. The order is also split
along regional lines. The many members of the Kaldoric branch would like to
see their branch of the order formed into an order independent from the Lady of
Paladins and the Chybisan branch is subdued in its actions due to the dispute
between the three eastern kingdoms over the control of Chybisa.

Sponsoring Order: Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow

The oldest order of the church of Larani on Hârn has confined its activities
to eastern Hârn since 622. The order's chief temple is in Thay; other major
temples are in Cherafir and Tashal. The order was founded on Hârn in 465 to
provide missionaries to "spread the faith". The order was sponsored by King
Erebir of Melderyn. The Grandmaster of the order and the primate of Hârn is
Kerthede Talvail, a virtuous woman whose major failing is her lack of
confidence.

LARANIAN FIGHTING ORDERS 13
Order of the Checkered Shield
The order of the Checkered Shield was founded in 622 by Andasin I to
guard the northern border of Kanday. The order quickly attracted many knights
and soldiers; which proved instrumental in capturing substantial lands for the
young kingdom. The order's headquarters are at Menekod castle, which it
seized from the Agrikan Order of the Copper Hook during Ezar's War. The
Checkered Shield is renowned for its individual and collective military prowess,
as well as for its chivalry. There is a deep rooted hostility between the order and
the Order of the Copper Hook, which holds Hyen keep about ten leagues from
Menekod. There has been frequent skirmishing between the two orders since
the end of Ezar's war. The present Chabla is Sir Syman Telfane. There is a
dispute between him and the sheriff of Norea at Quivum regarding control of
Dovan. Politically the order is split into three factions within the kingdom of
Kanday, there are the younger members who wish to finish the conflict with the
Copper Hook, there is the peace contingent who wishes to cease all hostilities
and then there are the moderates who try and maintain a balance between the
two extremes.

Sponsoring Order: Order of Hyvrik

The Order of Hyvrik was formally created in 593 when they were granted
land in the city of Aleath. The order takes its name from Larani's legendary red
and white checkered shield. The order quickly spread throughout southwestern
Hârn King Andasin I, the first ruler of Kanday, was a devout adherent of Larani
and granted the order extensive lands. The Aleath temple is the headquarters of
the order; other major temples are in Coranan and Shiran.

A fighting order is the secular equivalent of the clerical order. Instead of
temples it has chapter houses which vary in size and function. Some fighting
orders are limited to a single barracks on the grounds of its sponsor's temple.
Some have dozens of manors, castles, fortresses and hundreds of knights and
commoners. Many are able to conduct military campaigns and they often
achieve a high degree of independence. The headquarters of a fighting order are
usually near the seat of its sponsoring clerical order. Most fighting orders have
part time and full time members. The former are called up only in time of need
Church of Agrik
and are generally of independent means.

HISTORICAL AND RELIGIOUS CONTEXT

The Agrikan religion is one that fosters an environment of coercion and
domination through its beliefs. HârnMaster Religion has the following to say
about the mission of the church:

Theological Mission
The mission of the church of Agrik on Kethira is two-fold: the bloodthirsty
rituals appease Manrasusha and stave off the destruction of Kethira and the
constant battle trains warriors for the endless battle on Yashain. Their actions
on this world prepare them for the afterlife and eventual victory over the forces
of Larani and her allies.

Social Mission
The Agrikan church draws all kinds of bullies, psychopaths and violent
criminals into its ranks, as well as "regular" men and women. Within the
established church and the fighting orders people who would be outlaws in their
own cultures find a place to thrive and to excel alongside those who could be
successful in any environment. The Pamesani Games offer bloodsport to delight
the masses and provide revenue for the church. This helps ensure a steady
demand for the slave markets.

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 2
HIERARCHY
The Command Structure:
Like their parent clerical organizations, the fighting orders are composed of
a hierarchal command structure as follows.
Akarata (Grandmaster)
The commander in chief of a fighting order. Although he is not a priest, he
has far more command of rituals than do most laymen. He deals with the
clerical grandmaster and organizes his command in any manner he sees fit. He
may be assisted by a number of Tenakas (deputies). If the order wishes to
ingratiate itself with local government it may appoint the king (etc.) to the office.
In such cases he would be invited to preside over certain ceremonies, but the
running of the order would be done by a deputy. The Akarata is usually
appointed by his clerical grandmaster, on the advice of the ranking officers.
Tenaka (Deputy)
A senior member of the order who reports directly to the Akarata. His
duties can be extremely varied depending on the order's organization and
mission.
Meketa (High Commander)
The commander of an independent chapterhouse or temple guard. He takes
orders from the head of his order. If he commands a temple garrison, he is also
subject to the authority of the High Priest and the Master of the Middle
Discipline.
Telmen (Commander)
A knight-commander of an order. Telmen are subordinate to the Meketa,
perhaps commanding a small unit of the order's forces or taking responsibility
for duties to do with the running of the chapter (quartermaster, etc.).
Dotelen (Sub-Commander)
A deputy Telmen. These officers are appointed over small units and assist
the Telmen.
Haragki (Knight)
A noble member of the order. These knights rank below the preceding
officers and above any commonality.
Laumak (Soldier)
A member of the commonality of the order; these are warriors of low social
status. There may be corporals (Ainlaumaka) and sergeants (T'kelans), but
officers in Agrikan fighting orders are always noble.
Honorary Status
Any of the four preceding ranks may have their titles prefixed with the term
"Anas-", indicative of an honorary or part time status. "Anasi" can be regarded
as a kind of reserve. They have the right to occasional accommodation at the
order's houses and may use them as social clubs.

contained the living quarters of the lord and his family, the rooms of state, and
the prison cells.
Therefore, few orders hold such a structure; however, the ones that do, have
been awarded castles guarding regions prone to constant incursions and hostile
attacks. Most keeps will be supported by 10-20 manors. The role of these
manors being to supply the garrison with supplies and additional man-power.
Castles belonging to an order will have a normal garrison of two full chapters; a
castle guarding a hostile region may have double this.
Keeps
This is the same kind of fortified tower found in the castle above, however it
is surrounded by a less substantial curtain wall containing a gatehouse but no
supplementary towers. The supplemental features mentioned for the castle
above are minimal at best or nonexistent. Orders were awarded existing
structures within frontier or border regions for the explicit purpose of defending
the region from outside aggression. Most keeps will be supported by 5-10
manors and have a normal garrison of one full chapter; a keep guarding a
hostile region may have double this.

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 4
Priories
All order are broken into numerous chapters which in turn are based at
chapter houses called priories. Priories have the rural manor as their model; or a
keep if the order has one under its control. The priory is the command center
for all members of the order within a specific area and also acts as a collection
point for proceeds gathered from outlying subordinate manors and/or annexes.
The priory is normally commanded by a senior Meketa and houses a full
chapter of troops. The troops assigned to these chapters patrol trade and or
pilgrim routes, provide protection for religious and/or political leaders, and act
as concentration points for local defense or raids. Some of these establishments
may even have training facilities for new recruits.
Annexes
Like the above priory, these are founded upon rural manors but are
subordinate to the priories above. They are often commanded by a Telmen and
house a half-strength chapter. Their mission is very similar to that of the full
chapter giving the order additional manpower in regions where they have the
lands but not enough brothers to fill a full chapter.
In addition, they also fulfill the mission of a grange, which tends to be
absent in lands controlled by the Agrikan orders. In this capacity they have two
primary functions: one is to provide their mother houses with provisions and the
other is to act as a revenue generator for the order.

THE HÂRNIC ORDERS
Order of the Cohorts of Gashang
Interestingly, while its sponsoring clerical order, the order of the Eight
Demons, is restricted to women then Cohorts of Gashang is open only to males.
The headquarters of the order are at Themeson. The order's formal name is the
"Cohorts of Gashang the Emperor of Flame", but this is seldom use. The
Cohorts of Gashang are the result of the same theological/political disputes that
created their sponsoring clerical order; in the case of the Cohorts of Gashang
they split from their parent fighting order the Red Shadows of Herpa; in so doing
they also took Themeson keep with them. The Haragki and Laumak of the order
often deliver captives to the tender mercies of its parental clerical order in
Golotha, Shiran and Coranan; most Hârnians tend to avoid them. The Akarata
of the order is Crasel Merbed.

creation of a new clerical order, the Eight Demons, and their sponsoring fighting

headquartered in Shiran, holds extensive lands in the region. The Cohorts of
Gashang have not sworn fealty to Chafin III and may intend to return

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 12
Order of the Company of the Copper Hook
Established in 623 under the sponsorship of the clerical order of the Fuming
Gate. After several decades of aimless pillage and poverty the order swore fealty
to King Arlun of Rethem in 641 and were granted lands by King Nemiran in 681.
The next year the order used its bases at Menekod, Hyen, Dunir and Selvos to
launch an attack on the Kandaian keep at Imiden; thus starting a fifteen year
conflict that was to be named Ezar's War after their Akarata. With the defeat of
Rethem and the Peace of Selvos in 697 the lands of the Company of the Copper
Hook have been reduced to Hyen keep. The order has never recognized the
Peace of Selvos and has continued to skirmish against Kandaian units for the
last 23 years. The Akarata of the order is Marag Yeredar, a fifty-two year old
man whose sad and depressed demeanor belies a clever and scheming mind.

Hyen
Hyen keep was built in 532 as a Corani legion fortress. In 681 King Nemiran
granted it, together with Menekod, Dunir and Selvos, to the order of the Copper
Hook. In 682 the order provoked Ezar's War (682-697) by attacking Kanday,
eventually losing all possessions except Hyen. The Copper Hook has never
recognized the peace ending the war and continues to skirmish with the
Laranian fighting order, the Checkered Shield. The Earl of Tormau has been
supplying money through intermediaries to the order so it may continue its
"war" with the Laranians. The Akarata may not be aware of the true source of
this aid.

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 13
Order of the Red Shadows of Herpa
The order is headquartered at Menekai in the kingdom of Rethem. Like its
sponsoring clerical order it favors a "holy" crusade against the rest of Hârn. The
order was granted its lands in 681. In 708 it sent a force across the Gomisen and
seized Themeson keep from the Thardic Republic. However, when a faction
broke away to become the order of the Cohorts of Gashang in 714 they took
Themeson for their own. The Red Shadows are currently attempting to
exterminate the Kubora tribesmen of Peran. In keeping with their policy of
spreading-by-the-sward the word of Agrik, the order supports Chafin III, who is
seen as a leader who might be able to unify Rethem and lead the crusade they
favor. The Akarata of the order is Larga Gydsilen, a coarse and brutish thug.

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 14
Order of the Warriors of Mamaka
The order has its headquarters at Bedenes keep on Rethem's northern
border and periodically crusades against the Kuboran tribes of Peran. The
primary ambition of the Warriors of Mamaka is to re-establish a keep at the
ruins of Kustan. Bedenes was allegedly granted to the order by King Nemiran of
Rethem, although no record exists. It is more likely that the order seized the
district from its legal holder around 690 when the kings of Rethem were
involved in a war with Kanday; the keep itself dates from 699. The Akarata of
the order is Horab Gerund, a violent sensualist.

Order of Mamaka the Master of Steel

The supreme clerical sect of the church of Agrik and the sponsor of the
fighting order, The Warriors of Mamaka. The order's only temple is in Golotha
and this house is the seat of the Primate for Hârn; who, for the past three
decades, has been the grandmaster of the Order of Mamaka the Master of Steel.

Order of the Companions of Roving Doom
The order was established in 604 and helped Arlun the Barbarian to
establish the kingdom of Rethem. The order's house is Arketh, in the kingdom of
Rethem, from where Haragki of the order sally forth to commit acts of brutality
and intimidation. The kings of Rethem have traditionally employed the order to
"lean on trouble-makers", enchanted, no doubt, by their efficiency. Since the
virtual destruction of the sponsoring clerical order in 717, the Companions of
the Roving Doom have effectively become an independent body. The Akarata
of the order is Bremel Kawaran.

Order of the Pillar of Fire

The male, clerical sect of the church of Agrik which sponsors the Order of
the Companions of Roving Doom. The order's only temple, with most of its

AGRIKAN FIGHTING ORDERS 16
Order of the Crimson Dancer
The only female fighting-order of the church of Agrik. Formerly based in
Rethem, the order was banished as a "political liability" after Brenlyn Shernath,
the young sister of Baliela, assassinated Queen Eriel of Kanday in 694. Baliela
regards her sister, who was caught and executed, as a martyr and venerates her
as a saint. There is a hostel of the order in Shiran but the isolated Orbaalese
keep of Quimen has been the order's headquarters since 701 when it deemed it
wise to leave Rethem. The order draws most of its recruits from martially
inclined women of Orbaal who are disenchanted with an otherwise subservient
role in society. The Akarata of the order is Baliela Shernath; a fifty-three year
old who is a resilient and merciless survivor of temple intrigues and has
considerable influence over Alegar II.

complicity of King Alegar II and the help of Ivinian mercenaries. All of the ruling
clan, some sixty men, women and children were put to the sword. These brutal
executions sparked the Jarin Rebellion of 701-03. Ironically, the rebellion had
no substance at Quimen but created great difficulties for ruling Ivinian clans in
