5. Consultation Hours:
Your first point of contact is the primary instructor assigned for your class and tutor of your
practical tutorial session.
6. Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Weekly contact will consist of a two hour lecture and a two-hour laboratory/tutorial session. You
will have supervised laboratory/tutorial sessions and weekly online module exams. You will be
expected to maintain an engineering journal related to the laboratory/tutorial sessions and the
lectures. Your primary source of learning materials are the on-line curriculum, lecture slides and
the lab manual. You will be expected to spend some of the private study time in reading the web-
based curriculum before attending each class lecture session.
You will be expected to work in small groups (a group of two students) on the practical sessions
and maintain a workbook each week. You will be given an opportunity to discuss any problems
with tutorial exercises and lectures with the teaching staff.
Teaching staff associated with this unit will be available in person at specified times or via email to
answer your questions.
7. Assessment
This is not a graded course. Students enrolled in the QUT degree programs can apply for credit
for relevant unit allowed by the degree course co-ordinator and the unit co-ordinator.

8. Student’s responsibilities for this course:
You are required to maintain an engineering journal and lab journal throughout this course.
These two journals will be examined before the skills-based exam (SBA practical exam).
The engineering journal must be hand written. Drawing of physical and logical network
diagram is encouraged throughout this course.
You are allowed to paste the printed copy of the diagrams that you have developed.
In the absence of well-documented and maintained engineering journal, the instructor has full
rights to not let you sit for the SBA practical exam.
In order to become eligible to write the final online exam, you must finish all the online module
exams before the final exam date.
You are required to study in advance the chapter that will be discussed in the class by the
instructor.
You are also required to do necessary flash and e-lab activities prior to attending a class.
For every lab activity, you are required to work in pairs.
Make sure that you maintain a good communication with your lab partner to ensure

continuous participation in the lab sessions and completion of all lab exercises.
Every student is required to bring the following stationery items when attending the classes:
Pen, pencil, eraser
Notebook to make engineering journal
Optionally, removable storage media such as USB memory stick
Internet browsing is strictly NOT allowed during the lecture time unless it is a part of the
lecture and it has been instructed to do so.
There is no typing including the use of e-mail program allowed during the PowerPoint
presentation unless the Instructor specifically asks it.
If you are found doing any of the above stated the instructor has complete right to switch off
your computer.
The exam dates are normally announced at least 2 weeks in advance. It is student’s
responsibilities to make available time to attend the exam.
You are expected to inform the instructor in advance of your absence in the class in writing.
You should try to get your work finished well ahead of the deadlines.
9. Late Work Policy:
Students are required to refer to the faculty’s policy when requesting to defer any assessment due
date.
10. Computer Lab Facilities:
As a student you are required to obtain a student account in order to use a computer in one of
the labs in Gardens Point campus.
This student account will be primarily used as your login account to log onto any computer in
the campus.
Open lab time may be scarce, so you should make full use of your class time.
11. Doing your Own Work:
You are expected to do work in pairs for all lab exercises. Group discussions of course
material and studying together for tests are encouraged.
However, assignments and examinations must reflect the knowledge of the individual, not a
group unless stated otherwise.
If there is a case where two assignments appears to be the exact copy of each other, both
student may get zero marks.
12. Risk Management
There is no out-of-the-ordinary risks associated with this course.
