Film Analysis: Kurosawa's "Dreams"

The student provides a negative response to Akira Kurosawa's film Dreams. They found the film confusing and did not understand the overall theme or purpose. Although the film was meant to portray the director's dreams, the student felt it lacked explanation of how the dreams were connected or why the audience should care. The student acknowledges the film created an eerie and creepy atmosphere through dark lighting and music, possibly reflecting the director's feelings in the dreams. However, the student was ultimately not engaged by the film and unable to find a clear lesson or meaning.

Dreams Viewing Response

I would consider my response to this film by Akira Kurosawas to be a negative response.

I didn’t really understand the film or what was happening. I know that it was a compilation of

the director’s dreams over the years put into a film format, but I was very confused as to what

the theme was and why they were all tied together in the first place. Through my different

English classes throughout the years I have always been asked “so what” when writing a paper-

especially a narrative- and I don’t feel like the director addressed that in this film. Although I

know films and essays can be different, I just didn’t understand the purpose of the film- why

should the audience care, how does this relate to my life, what can I learn from it, etc.

Although I didn’t quite understand the purpose of this film or what it was trying to

portray throughout most of the film, it gave me a bit of an eerie negative vibe. In my opinion, I

felt that the director used the dark lighting and low toned slow music to give the film a creepy

energy. I think he may have done this to share with the audience and try to make us feel how he

was feeling as he was experiencing some of these frightening dreams. Since these are all dreams

he has experienced, he may choose to use these scenes with dark music and lighting to help the
viewer see his point of view. Everyone has had a bad dream or even a nightmare at some point in

their life, so he tries to help the viewer bring back how they felt when they experienced this so

that they can connect with the story on a deeper level and feel what he was feeling. I do think he

was successful in this attempt because I did feel his fears and anxieties when he was struggling

with the snow and entrapment.

This film brought to mind my viewing experience of last weeks film Coffee and

Cigarettes. Although both were vignette style films, short film snippets one after another that are

not related to a central story line, I don’t think these two films had anything in common other

than this style choice. In my opinion, last week’s film had a theme/moral to the story, but I was

unable to find that in this week’s film of Dreams. The other difference between the two films is

that Coffee and Cigarettes seemed to be a realistic movie about the daily life at a coffee shop

while Dreams was more of a sci-fi or fantasy movie.

Overall, I was not a fan of the movie this week. It didn’t grab my attention and I couldn’t

seem to find a purpose or lesson in the film. I always try to find something that I can learn from a

movie even if it is just something I am watching with my boyfriend and/or family on the

weekends. Even though I didn’t like this movie, this class is teaching me to step out of my

comfort zone and analyze and try to understand movies that are not of my typical style and I

think this will help me in the future.
