An Ethical Dilemma
Course Number – Course Name: NURS 412 - Ethics, Law and Economic Policy
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student with an opportunity to analyze an
ethical issue in healthcare. An ethical decision-making model will be used along with application of
ethical principles and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Student Approach to Assignment
For this assignment I had to think back to a time where I was faced with or observed an
ethical dilemma in clinical practice. As a nurse, I always seek to provide the appropriate care to
each patient. The issue with ethical dilemmas is that often there is not a clear right or wrong
option. This forced me to take a deeper look into my own value systems and beliefs to choose the
best option. I learned how to take a step back from the issue, use my best nursing judgement and
critical thinking to weigh the options and consequences.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
Ethical dilemmas are an inescapable aspect of healthcare and nursing practice. Having a
solid base of personal values and beliefs will help a nurse to navigate any issues that she may
encounter. The patient must always be at the center of these decisions. This assignment details
my logical thought process and ultimate decision regarding the ethical encounter I observed.
• Critical Thinking
o Uses decision-making skills in making clinical or professional judgements.
I used my decision-making skills to think of all my options regarding the lack of
paperwork and miscommunication with the transport order. I weigh the pros and cons of
the different options I came up with. I used my personal values and nursing model to help
guide me, and ultimately make a decision that would benefit my patient – keep her on the
unit until morning, control her pain, and get the MD to sign the consent as soon as
possible.
• Professionalism
o Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical
situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and advocacy for patient well-
being and preferences.
I utilized the ANA Code of Ethics to guide my decision-making as well as my
own personal values and morals. I advocated for my patient to the surgeon, by requesting
that an MD come and sign the appropriate transport consent. To the transport personnel I
requested that the patient not be left waiting on the stretcher in the middle of the hallway
had them wait in her room. I also advocated for the patient to her family who was
becoming increasingly irritated and irate causing the patient distress and anxiety. I
advocated while remaining professional but always keeping the patient at the center of
the decision.
