Calibration of Bitumen Sprayers

This document provides a method for calibrating bitumen sprayers to test for transverse distribution of the spray in the field. It references test methods BCA T/1-T/4 for determining the spray distribution across widths. The method involves measuring the output at different pump speeds and spray widths. A report of the test should include the minimum and maximum pump outputs, the pump settings needed for different spray widths, and the average output per pump revolution. Pass/fail criteria are also provided to evaluate if the transverse distribution meets tolerance levels.

Calibration of Bitumen Sprayers

Part 4: Transverse Distribution by BCA Field Method

PREFACE
This Seal Design Test Method was prepared by an APRG Working Group on behalf of
AUSTROADS. Representatives of AUSTROADS, ARRB Transport Research and Industry through
the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA), and the National Association of Testing
Authorities (NATA) have been involved in the development and review of this test method.
____________________

METHOD
1 SCOPE
The procedure described in this test method follows the path detailed in BCA T/1 – T/4. The method
has been developed to provide sprayer operators with a procedure for determining the transverse
distribution characteristics of sprayers in the field.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS
The following document is referred to in this test method:

BCA-New Zealand Test Methods for Bitumen Sprayers BCA T/1 - T/4

3 PROCEDURES
The test method is provided in BCA T/1 – T/4, Test Methods for Bitumen Sprayers.
For the purpose of this method, the minimum bar widths to be tested shall include the maximum width
for which certification is required and the bar width corresponding to a single lane.

4 REPORT

The following shall be reported:

(a) minimum and maximum pump output in litres/minute;
(b) pump revolutions and number of jets required for specified width of spraying including
maximum possible width.
(c) Average output per pump revolution in litres/minute

AUSTROADS SDT 10.4:2001

Where the measure of transverse distribution does not provide quantitative data, the report shall
indicate pass or fail. Suggested tolerance levels are:

• The mass of binder on any one strip shall not exceed 20% of the average of all strips.
• The mass of binder on any two in any consecutive ten strips shall not exceed 15% of the
average
• The mass of binder on any four in any consecutive seven strips shall not exceed 10% of
the average.

5 PRECISION
No estimate of precision is currently available.
