LESSON LEARNING OUTCOMES:
6.1 Know Green Technology in 6.2 Understand the use of
environmental-friendly materials and
construction. sustainable construction methods.
• 6.1.1 Define Green Technology and green • 6.2.1 Explain the concept of reuse, recycle,

• 6.1.2 List characteristic of green building • 6.2.2 Identify green building materials
• 6.1.3 State the criteria of green building
from local sources.
• Green Buildings should be designed and operated to reduce the overall impact of
the built environment on its surroundings.
• In Malaysia, GBI (Green Building Index) Organization take place in controlling GBI
requirement.
Green Building in construction.
Malaysia has developed its very own green building rating
tools, which are:
1. Green Building Index (GBI) (2009),
2. GREEN PASS (Green Performance Assessment
System)(2012),
3. PH JKR (Skim Penilaian Penarafan Hijau JKR) (2012), and
4. GreenRE (Green Real Estate) (2013)
Green Building Index (GBI).
• In August 2008, PAM Council endorsed and approved the
formation of the new Sustainability Committee who was
tasked primarily to develop and set-up the Green Building
Index and the accompanying Panel for certification and
accreditation of Green-rated buildings.
• In addition, Greenbuilding index Sdn Bhd was incorporated
in February 2009, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PAM and the
Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), to
administrate GBI accreditation and training of GBI
Facilitators and Certifiers.

Criteria of Green Building. (Based on GBI Rating)
Criteria of Green Building. (GBI Rating)
Importance of Green Building in construction.
• Waste is minimized at every stage during the construction and operation of the
building, resulting in low costs.
• Green buildings are designed to save energy and resources, recycle materials and
minimise the emission of toxic substances throughout its life cycle.
• Green buildings harmonise with the local climate, traditions, culture and the
surrounding environment.
• Green buildings are able to sustain and improve the quality of human life whilst
maintaining the capacity of the ecosystem at local and global levels.
• Green buildings make efficient use of resources, have significant operational savings
and increases workplace productivity.
• Building green sends the right message about a company or organisation – that it is
well run, responsible, and committed to the future.

Sustainable Construction Methods: 4R’s Concept.
• Reduce:
• Prevent waste in the first place;
• by eliminating waste at source through better planning and design.
• It makes possible to minimize the goods or materials that we use and thus ensures less
waste.
• Reuse :
• Increase creativity on site.
• Reuse materials waste whenever possible;
• This is both cost-effective and reduces waste to landfill.
• Avoiding the use of disposable goods (only used once) and this can extend the use of goods
before they actually become waste.
Sustainable Construction Methods: 4R’s Concept.
• Recycle:
• Secondary material use. Not all goods can be recycled but a practice has been started all over the
world.
• Down-cycle if it cannot be reused.
• Ensure a good separation of waste into “one-material fractions” that can be more easily recycled.
• Enable segregation of at least 6 fractions: Wood, Concrete, Gypsum / Plasterboard, Metal, Plastic -
soft and hard, Paper/Cardboard.
• When discarded materials are recycled, these provide industry with an alternative source of raw
materials.
• This results in less demand for virgin materials whose extraction, transport and processing are
major sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
• Recycling, thus, reduces emissions in virtually all extractive industries. Recycling of paper and wood
products has a notable double impact. Not only does it reduce the demand for virgin wood fibre- it
reduces deforestation. It also preserves forests' ability to continue to act as carbon sinks (removing
carbon from the atmosphere).
• Recycling also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
