Self-awareness involves understanding one's own emotions and how they affect others. Self-regulation is controlling impulses and expressing emotions appropriately. Motivation comes from inner goals rather than external rewards. Empathy requires understanding others' emotions, which relies on self-awareness. According to Daniel Goleman, there are five main elements of emotional intelligence.

 Self-Awareness
 Self-Regulation
 Motivation
 Empathy
 Social Skills
1. Self-Awareness
This is the ability to recognize and understand one’s moods, motivations, and
abilities. Also understanding the effects, they have on others. Goleman
suggests that people who possess this self-awareness have a good sense
of humour, are confident in themselves and their abilities, and are aware
of how other people perceive them.
2. Self-Regulation/ Reasoning with Emotions
This is the ability to control one’s impulses, the ability to think before you
speak/react, and the ability to express yourself appropriately. Self-regulation
is all about expressing your emotions appropriately. Goleman also
suggests that those with strong self-regulation skills are high in
conscientiousness. They are thoughtful of how they influence others and
take responsibility for their own actions.
3. Motivation
People who are emotionally intelligent are motivated by things beyond
mere external rewards like fame, money, recognition, and acclaim.
Instead, they have a passion to fulfil their own inner needs and goals.
4. Empathy
This is the ability to understand other people’s emotions and reactions.
Empathy can only be achieved if self-awareness is achieved. Goleman believes
that one must be able to understand themselves before they can understand
others.
5. Social Skills
Being able to interact well with others is another important aspect of
emotional intelligence. Goleman states that emotional maturity in this
component defines someone who has good communication skills, good time
management, the ability to be a leader or manage a group of people, and the ability to
resolve difficult situations or conflicts using negotiation or persuasion.

Role of emotional intelligence in leadership

 Self-regulation: Controlling or redirecting our disruptive emotions and
adapting to change circumstances in order to keep the team moving in a
positive direction. When you take on a leadership role you have to be
confident and not panic in stressful situations.
 Empathy and Compassion: Empathy is the ability to put yourself in
someone else's shoes and understand how they may feel or react to a
certain situation. Empathetic leaders have knowhow of developing and
maintaining the talent.
   Relationship Management and Social skills: People with great social
skills excels in change management and conflict resolution. They are
excellent communicators. They have huge contacts and a high capability
to build connections. They are proficient in team management.
 Effective Communication: Lack of communication or
miscommunication are usually the basis of problems between most
people. Good communication results in alignment and a shared sense of
purpose.
 Motivation: They are intrinsically motivated. Motivated people are
passionate people. They are keen in discovering new methodologies of
performing and inquisitive about the reasons why tasks are performed
in a particular manner and not the others.

Emotional intelligence is a powerful tool critical for exceeding goals,

improving critical work relationships, and creating a healthy, productive
workplace and organizational culture.
