The Great Day is Coming

By Alan E. Highers 2011

Zeph 1:14

I. Day of the Lord

A. Not always refer to the same time. It is in time when God intervenes in the affairs of men in some visible manifestation to reveal God’s
power and authority. The day of the Lord is determined by the context.
B. Old Testament
1. Zeph 1:14 Judgment to Judah
2. Isa 13:9 Downfall of Babylon
3. Lam 2:22 Fall of Jerusalem
C. New Testament = second coming
1. 2 Thess 2:1-2

II. Four examples to illustrate the power of God

A. Zeph. 1:14; 2:2-3
1. The punishment of God is conditional and so is his promises, but if Judah fails, the day of the Lord will consume them.
2. The day of the Lord is not to be ignored. Zeph. 1:14-18. It is serious that every believer must take heed to what is said.
B. Joel 2:28-31
1. Peter’s sermon Acts 2:16-20. The fulfillment explicitly is in Acts 2.
2. J.W. McGarvey said that it has reference to the Judgment
3. David Lipscomb said that it is the day of Pentecost. (2 Reasons)
a. Peter said “This is that spoken by the prophet Joel.” “This” talking about the day of Pentecost.
b. The prophets were primarily concerned with the first coming of Christ not the second coming of Christ.
(1) One of the weaknesses of premillennial view is to apply Old Testament prophecies to the second coming of Christ instead
of applying it t Christ’s first coming (e.g. Dan. 2:44 about the kingdom).
4. Why people took the view that the fulfillment is in the second coming of Christ?
a. Because of the moon, sun, clouds, wonders, fire, etc. will come before the great day of the Lord. Bro. Lipscomb suggested
that these things were fulfilled during the death of Christ.
b. Imagery is sometimes used to the fall of a nation or relinquishment of power (E.g. in Zephaniah, Isaiah 13:10). The Jewish
economy came to an end, and the old law is over before the great day will come—a new order has come, the church came to
existence, God intervened, the Holy Spirit went down.
C. 2 Pet 3:3; Acts 1:9-11
1. God has promised a day in the past. Referring to Christ’s second coming. God’s performance in the past is proof of God’s promises
in the future.
2. 2 Thess 2:1-4 some certain things must transpire first before the second coming. A great apostasy 1 Tim 4:1-4. Those things have
now occurred. That means the day of the Lord could come at any time.
D. Acts 17:31
1. Referring to the great day of Judgment. The day of the Lord every time there is a promise of coming.
2. Heb 9:27 Death is certain; judgment is sure; heaven is real’, and death is eternal (Rev. 22:12-14; 20:12).

III. Do not trifle the Great Day of the Lord. ARE WE READY FOR THAT DAY TO COME?
