PTE202:DRILLING TECHNOLOGY

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: describe oil and gas well drilling operations.

CO2 :: memorize the field equipment's used in drilling practices.

CO3 :: apply fundamental equations and calculations used in drilling engineering.

CO4 :: analyze the nature of difficulties and predict solutions to the problems in drilling.

Unit I
Introduction to drilling and drilling rigs : introduction to oil and gas drilling hardware system,
power generation system for drilling rigs, hoisting and rotary system, drilling fluid circulation system,
types of onshore and offshore rigs with its selection criteria, horsepower calculations for draw-works
and rotary system.
Unit II
Mud engineering : drilling fluids - its functions and types, compositions and properties of mud,
rheology of mud, additives and mud contamination, mud conditioning system, mud and hydrostatic
pressure calculations, volume and weight-related calculations of mud during drilling., circulation
system - mud pumps, numerical related to mud pumps of circulation system
Unit III
Drilling operations and difficulties : drilling operations, problems and solutions, factors affecting
ROP, drilling bit and IADC classification of bit, application of bit, dull bit gradation, problems
concerned with drilling fluid and drill pipe stuck up, geometry of a stuck pipe and remedial methods.,
hole problems -lost circulation, kick etc.
Unit IV
Casing and cementation : casing – its functions and types, API grades of the casing and its
properties, threads and couplings, casing design and it's related numerical problems, cementation
operations- functions of cement and its classification, strength retrogradation and cement additives,
methods of cementation and cementing accessories, field problems pertaining to cementation job and
cement slurry calculations.
Unit V
Rig hydraulics : fluid flow and associated pressures in the rotary rig circulating system, types of
fluids and its flow, pressure losses in pipe and annulus during drilling operations, fluid flow and
pressure drop across bit nozzles, equivalent circulating density (ECD) flow models.
Unit VI
Drilling techniques and types of well, well control, coring, and fishing : introduction to
directional, horizontal and multilateral drilling techniques, types of wells and their applications, the
terminology and basic mathematics used in directional wells, downhole motors, survey equipment,
rotary survey system, well control - well control equipment BOP and different techniques of well
control, coring and fishing tools and their operations.
