SQUARE AND HEX NUTS
4. Introductory Notes.
IFI Notes:
1. ANSVASME 818.2.2 Is a standard developed through the procedures of The
American Society of Mechanical Engineers. 818.2.2 is under the jurisdic
tion of ASME Standards Committee B18 and is the direct responsibility of
its Subcommittee 2.
2. B18.2.2 presents the dimensional requirements for 14 nut products:
‘square (including the optional cold formed design)
hex flat
hhex fiat jam
hex
hex jam
hex slotted
hex thick
hox thick slotted
heavy square (including the optional cold formed design)
heavy hex flat
heavy hex flat jam
heavy hex
heavy hex jam
heavy hex slotted
Of these 14 products, hex and heavy hex nuts are the most widely used and
IFI recommends their selection be given priority consideration. Other
designs of nuts, principally prevailing-torque nuts and hex flange nuts, are
also extremely popular and deserve consideration. Standards for these lat-
ter products are covered later in this Section D and in Section F.
3. Hex castle nuts were standard in previous editions of B18.2.2. However, for
many yearo user interest in cactlo nuts hae been declining and reached a
point where they no longer warranted recognition as a standard product.
For this reason, Committee B18 authorized their discontinuation.
4. For the first time an optional design of square nut is included in B18.2.2.
Through slight modification of the width across comers tolerances and by
chamfering both nut faces, square nuts can be fully cold formed. This per-
mits potential economies without sacrifice of performance capability.
5. ANSVASME_B18.2.2 — 1986 is reprinted with the permission of its

Engineering Center, 345 E. 47th Street, New York, N.Y. 10017 U.S.A.

14 Scope.
144 This standard is intended to cover the
complete general and dimensional data for
hex nuts recognized as "American National
Standard.” Also included are appendixes cov-
ing gaging of slots in slotted nuts, (Appen-
dix |, page D-18), wrench openings for nuts
(Appendix Ill, page D-20) and formulas on— ANSI/ASME

which dimensional data are based (Appendix
Il, page D-19). It should be understood, how-
ever, that where questions arise concerning
acceptance of product, the dimensions in the
tables shall govern over recalculation by
formula.
44.2 The inclusion of dimensional data in
this standard is not intended to imply that all
of the products described herein are stock
production sizes. Consumers are requested
to consult with manufacturers concerning
lists of stock production sizes.
12 Dimensions.
All dimensions in this standard are in
inches, unless stated otherwise.
13. Options.
Options, where specified, shall be at the
discretion of the manufacturer unless other-
ise agreed upon by the manufacturer and
the purchaser.
14. Terminology.
For definitions of terms relating to fas-
teners or component features thereof used in
this standard, refer to American National
Standard, Glossary of Terms for Mechanical
Fasteners, ANSI/ASME B18.12, page Mi.
4.8 Reterenced Standards.
(IF Note: Titles and sources of availability of
ASME, ASTM and SAE standards referenced
in this standard are given an page M28.)
2 General Data.
241. Width Across Flats.
‘The width across flats of nut shall be the
distance measured, perpendicular to the axis
of nut, overall between two opposite sides of
the nut in accordance with the notes on
respective dimensional tables. For milled-
frombar hex nuts, the nominal bar size used
shall be the closest commercially available
size to the specified basic width across flats
of the nut. For milled‘from-bar non-ferrous
huts, the tabulated maximum (basic) width
across flats dimensions may be exceeded to
conform with the commercial tolerances of
drawn of rolled bar stock material.
2.2 Nut Thickness.
The nut thickness shall be the overall
distance, measured parallel to the axis of nut,
from the top of the nut to the bearing surface
and shall include the thickness of the washer
face where provided.
23° Threads,
2.3.1 Threads shall be Unified Standard,
Class 28, of the series specified in the notes,
‘on respective dimensional tables, in accord-
ance with American National Standard, ANSI/
ASME B1.1, page A26.
2.3.22 Thread Gaging. Unless otherwise spe-
ified by the purchaser, gaging for screw
thread dimensional acceptability shall be i
accordance with Gaging System 21 as speci-
fied in American National Standard, ANSI
ASME B13, Page A-53.
24° Finish.
Uniess otherwise specified, nuts shall
be supplied with a natural (as processed)
finish, unplated or uncoated,
2.5 Workmanship.
Nuts shall be free from burrs, seams,
laps, loose scale, irregular surfaces and any
defects affecting their serviceability.
26 Designation.
Nuts shall be designated by the follow-
ing data in the sequence shown: Nominal size
(fraction or decimal}; threads per inch; prod-
uct name; material (including specification
where necessary); protective finish, if re
quired. See exampies below:
