Miniproject Problem: Finite Element Analysis

The document provides instructions for a finite element analysis miniproject. Students must select a machine part or structure, obtain approval, and model it in ANSYS or Optistruct. They must perform manual calculations for loads, deflections, and stresses. Students then use FEA software to analyze the part and compare the results to manual calculations. The report requires sections on the objective, approach, analytical calculations, software outputs, comparison of methods, analysis, and conclusions. Students can work in groups of up to 4 members and must submit both soft and hard copies of the report. The rubric evaluates the problem statement and validation, procedure, presentation skills, and activity report.

Finite Element Analysis

MINIPROJECT
Problem
You are required to carry out finite element analysis on any machine or structure element
as a miniproject. First select a machine part or structure and get approved from your teacher. (You
can choose any truss or beam structure or machine element within MITAOE campus / or choose
any case study based upon practical applications)
Assume suitable data such as material & its properties, dimensions (By reverse engineering)
Linearization, constraints, etc.
Show detailed calculations for the selected part manually, by following the steps learned
in the class. Later, carry out the analysis by utilizing computer software such as ANSYS
Mechanical APDL/Workbench/Optistruct and make comparison between your analytical
calculations and the results obtained from the software. You should submit report of miniproject
as per following contents.
Your report should contain the following (but not limited to):
a. Title page
b. Table of contents
c. Objective
d. Approach (problem simplification, assumptions, boundary conditions, and etc). Include
sketches with dimensions and photographs of the machine part or structure.
e. Analytical calculations (load calculations, determination of nodal deflections and stresses)
f. Software outputs (include setup, applied loads, boundary conditions, etc)
g. Comparison between manual calculations and software outputs.(Any software i.e. Ansys/
Optistruct)
h. Analysis (Determine weak points within the structure, maximum load which can be
applied to the structure, etc).
i. Conclusions.
j. List of references
a. Softcopy of the report using ANSYS / Optistruct software has to uploaded on moodle.
b. Hardcopy of the report.
NOTE: You are allowed to form a group to solve the given problem. (Each group can have max
4 students). All the members within a particular group will be given same mark for the work
submitted.
 Each group should work on different machine part/ structure.

 You can continue with your work once your proposal is approved.
 Submission dates will be communicated as per blocks.
