History of San Isidro College
Instruction: Fill in the blanks for Activity 5 and be acquainted to the History of SIC.
San Isidro College was established when Malaybalay was still a young capital town of Bukidnon. It is the only
Catholic Institution of learning in the locality and the oldest in the province.

It was founded by the late Fr. Joseph Reith, S. J in July 1949. It was his first assignment as a parish Priest when
he opened San Isidro High School. He named the school after the town’s patron saint, San Isidro Labrador; thus the
school logo bears the motto “Ora et Lebora” which means Prayer and work.

San Isidro High School started in 1949-1950 with 90 first year students and 30 second year students under 5
teaching staff. They held classes at a two-story residential house where now stands the Religious of Virgin Mary
convent. The RVM were with Fr. Joseph Reith in running the school.

In 1953-1971 the Principal of San Isidro High School was SisterMary Redempta McConnel, CSJ who was at that
time also the superior of the RVM in Malaybalay. She was with Sr. Ma. Remedios Tagamolita, Procuratrix and
Sr.Ma.Estrella Lopez, the Dormitory in-charge.

In 1952, San Isidro High School produced its first batch of 23 graduates. After four years, the school’s
administration was turned over to the American Sisters of the Congregation of Saint Joseph of Newark. Thus, Sister
Mary Redempta McConnel, CSJ began her 18 years of administration in 1953.

In 1955, the twelve-room school building was constructed across the Sawaga River in Impalambong,
Malaybalay. Until now San Isidro College, with all its expansions, stands with pride through the years in the s ame
location. Other buildings rose during Sr. Redempta’s time, buildings which became landmarks of the school’s mission to
give Christian education to the youth of Bukidnon.

Notable among the buildings are the following: Villa San Jose which was built 1963 which now accommodates
the High School Library, Chapel and the Guidance Office of the school Gymnasium which was built in 1966 and has
been useful to the school and the Malaybalay community in so many ways; the left wing of the High School building
which now the Office of the Community Outreach and the High School Audio-Visual Center on the first floor and
classrooms on the second floor.

The school grew in its academic perspective an offered a one-year Collegiate Secretartial Course in the school
year, 1962-1963 with an initial enrolment of 50 students. That was just the beginning for it ushered in the opening of
three more college courses: Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1964, Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Science in
Education in 1965. The school attained full college status in 1969. In 1970, the one-year Secretarial Course became a
two-year Junior Secretarial Course. In 1971, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Newark was called to the United States America.
They turned over the school to the Prelature of Malaybalay headed by Bishop Francisco Claver, S.J., D.D. who invited
the Marist Brothers to manage the school for him.

For fourteen years (1971-1985), San Isidro College was managed by the Marist Brothers. The Marist Brothers
did additional improvements to the physical plant of the school. Constructions included the covered walks and the
College Buildings. The gymnasium was renovated. Likewise, volumes of books were added to the library and equipment
were purchased. On human resource development, scholarship programs for the faculty and deserving students were
provided.
In the mid 80s, San Isidro College saw change in the administration. The Missionary Benedectine Sisters took
over the administration and management of the school in 1985 was with the Bishop of Malaybalay, Monsignor
Gaudencio Rosales, D.D. as the Chair of the Board of Trustees.

The Missionary Benedectine Sisters brought major changes to San Isidro College in their eleven-year
management of the school. They left significant constructions like the Grade School St. Benedict building, the Guest
House\College Home Economics building and a dormitory near the Sawaga Bridge.

The Benedictine Sisters opened he Grade School in 1993, acquired the state-of-the-art instructional hardware and
software and other equipment and resources. In 1994, SIC was headed by Bishop Honesto Ch. Pacana, S.J., D.D as Chair
of the Board of Trustees. In 1997, Fr. Felimon Ares, Jr, a diocesan priest, became the President. From SY: 2000-2001 to
SY: 2003-2004, _________________________________, a Canossian Sister, was the President. She was followed by
______________________________. As of today, Fr. Virgilio H. Delfin, CPA, DBM is the incumbent president of the
College.

At present, San Isidro College continues to serve the community as the only Catholic higher educational
institution in Malaybalay.

Lesson 3: Vision and Mission in Life

Objectives:

1. Let the students write their own Vision Statements

2. Let the students write their own Mission Statements

Instruction:

1. Create your personal Vision and Mission Statement. Below are the guidelines for making
your own Vision-Mission Statements.

What is a vision and mission statement?

A vision and mission statement is a paragraph that encapsulates everything you would like to be, do, and
have in your future. It defines what success and excellence look like to you. It expresses your vision for
where you want to be in the future and it reflects your values, goals, and purpose and how you want to
operate. Everyone’s will look and sound completely different. It’s important that it
encapsulates your values and aspirations, and that it makes you feel really good and inspired when you
read it aloud.
How does a vision statement differ from a mission statement?
Vision and mission statements are very similar but they have their differences. Let’s take a deeper look:
Vision statement:
● A vision statement describes what you want to achieve in the future.
● The vision statement answers the question “Where do I want to be?”
● It defines the optimal desired future state—the mental picture—of what you want to achieve over time,
say in five, ten or more years.
● It inspires you to give your best and shapes your understanding of why you are doing what you do.

Mission statement:
● A mission statement describes what you want now and how you will achieve your long term aspiration.
● A mission statement does not define a long term future state but is more concerned with the present
state. It answers the questions of: “What do I do?”, “How do I do it?”, “Who do I do it for?”, “What
makes me different”, and “What is the benefit?”
● It talks about the present leading to the future, and how you will get to where you want to be.

What makes a good vision and mission statement?

● A good vision and mission statement is concise and inspirational.
● It’s easy to memorize and repeat.
● It should be clear, engaging, and realistic, and describe a bright future.
● It should furthermore state your intentions, summarize your values, and demonstrate your commitment
to living up to these values.

So, how do I go about writing it? What are the steps?

When composing your own statement, find a quiet place where you feel at ease and
where you will not be interrupted. Then follow the below steps and guiding questions.

Step 1: Answer the following questions as honestly as you can.

● What personal qualities do you most want to emphasize in yourself?
● How can you use and display these qualities in the environment you currently are in?
● What are the most important values you want to express at home and at school?

Step 2: Visualize yourself five years from now.

● Imagine that you are working and or managing the work of your dreams. Envision that
everything is exactly the way you want it to be. Imagine that you are every bit as
successful as you want to be. Feel it and see it.
● Keep imagining yourself in the future, and be as specific as possible in your
observations. Where exactly are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? Who are
you interfacing with? How are you feeling? Why do you want to be exactly where you
are? What is the bigger impact you are having?
● Draw a picture of yourself and your surroundings five years from now. Draw the
elements you see, feel, and hear. Use as many colors as you want and be as detailed
as possible.

Step 3: Sum up your vision and mission.

● Write to the following questions: How can you sum up your vision and mission? What
are the things you ultimately want to achieve? Who do you want to be? What do you
want to do? What is the impact you would like to have and how would you like to be
perceived?
● What will need to happen in order for you to feel proud of your progress in five years’
time?

Now, take everything—the envisioning, writing, drawing, dreaming—and use the

language and imagery to write your own vision and mission statement. Give yourself as
many drafts as you need to refine it. Remember it should express the values that you
would like to live and work by, and that above all you must feel excited and inspired by
it when you read it aloud.

Review your vision and mission statement.

As your view of yourself and the future changes, it is important that you review, update
and refine your vision and mission statement. If you feel really inspired, you may even
want to expand it with more detail and turn it into a personal development plan. So get
scribbling and imagine how nice it will be to start out with a clear roadmap for where
you want to go and how to get there!
