Erosion and Deposition Exogenic Processes Objectives

Erosion, weathering, and deposition shape the Earth's surface through exogenic processes driven by solar energy and gravity. Various agents like water, wind, ice, and gravity cause erosion, while deposition forms new landforms like deltas, floodplains, and beaches as eroded materials are deposited. A diagram outlines different methods of erosion and the landforms they create through deposition.

Erosion and Deposition
Exogenic Processes
Objectives
a. identify the different agents of erosion and deposition

b. describe characteristic surface features and landforms created and the processes that contributed to
their formation

Lecture

 Erosion, weathering, and deposition are at work everywhere on Earth.  Exogenic processes are
essentially driven by forces generated by the Sun-Earth system and by the pull of gravity. The sun’s
energy drives the water cycle. Gravity pulls anything toward the center of Earth causing rock and other
materials to move downhill.  Water's movements (both on land and underground) cause weathering
and erosion, which change the land's surface features and create underground formations.
 Erosion goes hand in hand with the deposition process. Because deposition drops sediments and built
new landforms.
 Below is a diagram that shows the different methods of erosion and the different land formations.

Erosional Control
Erosion is now becoming a bigger problem in the farming industry. It is a natural process, but human
activities make it worse. There are proven and tested ways to control it. As a student, you can help too.Use
your ideas on erosionby writing a short conveying letter and suggest ways to the government on how to at
least lessen the problem about the erosion.

C. Directions: Describe the diagram below and explain how the Velocity of the water and Volume of water
passing through enhancing the ability of the stream to transport sediments. Write your ideas in bullet form.
(10 pts)
 Velocity – dictates the ability of the stream to erode and transport; controlled by gradient, channel size
and shape, channel roughness, and the amount of water flowing in the channel
 Discharge – a volume of water passing through a cross-section of a stream during a given time; as the
discharge increases, the width of the channel, the depth of flow, or flow velocity increase individually
or simultaneously
 Or Channel slope ↓, Channel roughness ↓, Discharge ↑, Channel size↑, Flow velocity↓
 Streams transport their sediment load in three ways: in solution (dissolved load), in suspension
(suspended load), sliding and rolling along the bottom (bedload)
