ABOUT THE UNIT To explore and develop ideas about colours and
textures using different media to convey feelings i.e. reds, orange etc
as warm colours for happiness.

RESOURCES large brushes, ready mix, emulsion and acrylic paints, chalk
and oil pastels, tissue paper, cellophane.

SKILLS TO BE TAUGHT/LEARNING OUTCOMES/ASSESSMENT


• Discuss likes and dislikes of work they see.
• Name the primary colours and the secondary colours made when they
are mixed.
• Show creativity in ideas when applying paint and talk about why they
used certain materials and why.

POSSIBLE TEACHING ACTIVITIES


• Look at some well-known artists work that use colour to depict
moods. How do the colours make us feel?
• Use paint swatches, paper samples and magazines to make a
collection of favourite colours.
• Use different colour focus to explore different media i.e. exploring
reds with oil/chalk pastels. Use paint thick or runny. What different
ways can it be applied? Add glue or sawdust to paint to create
different effects/textures.
• Experiment with overlapping different colour cellophanes and tissue
papers and glueing them together, use glue to plastic techniques.
• Record colour mixing experiments in sketchbooks including colour
sums i.e. red + yellow = orange.
• Develop work on a large scale in response to children’s ideas on
feelings and expressing emotions through different colours and
marks and using key words to stimulate e.g. Laugh, twinkle etc.
• Scratch and scrape into paint, splatter, pour, use fingers, explore…
