Change poetry tells of three or more
Change Poetry stages that occur as a thing evolves into
something new.

A change poem relates each stage in the subject’s evolution. A thoughtful statement is made
about the changes. The poem follows an ABCB pattern.

Seed into sapling,

sapling into tree,
I really see “Home, Sweet Home”
right in front of me.
–Megan Fowler

The first line names the change from Seed into sapling,
the first stage to the second stage.
The second line names the change sapling into tree,
from the second to third stage.
A thoughtful statement describes I really see “Home, Sweet Home”
the final stage. The final line should right in front of me.
rhyme with line 2.

Teaching Suggestions
Prepare students for this writing project by asking them to think of several sets of subjects
with three stages: eggs, tadpoles, frogs; baby, child, adult; arguing, fighting, war. The f inal
sentence of a change poem is very important to its meaning. Have students try to find
a phrase that captures both understanding and an emotion. Use the sample poem as an
example. What words show an understanding of what happens in the last stage of the life of a
tree? (narrator sees a home built from trees) How was it expressed to evoke emotion? (“Home,
Sweet Home” is a phrase often used to express the warmth and love existing in one’s home.)

Some Things Just Go Better Together...

Language Fundamentals
is the perfect companion to
Daily Language Review
Thousands of grades 1 through 6 classrooms use Daily Language Review
for focused practice and review. Multiple studies show that this type
of distributed, or spaced, practice is a powerful strategy for achieving
proficiency and retention of skills.
Student responses on the weekly Daily Language Review units will indicate
those skills needing further reinforcement. Language Fundamentals can
then be used to provide the reteaching and additional practice. For example:

The student makes errors in week 14

of Daily Language Review. Your
assessment is that the student needs
more practice with these skills because:
• the student does not use a comma
to separate items in a series.
• the student identifies nouns as
adjectives.

Group Story

A Circle Story

Circle stories require that each item leads to the next and that the story ends up where it started.
To help students understand how circle stories work, read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
or If You Give a Pig a Pancake both by Laura Joffe Numeroff.

Follow these steps to write a group circle story:

1. Draw a large circle on the board. Draw a small
circle in the center. Divide the large circle into sixths.

item in each part of the circle. Each item must 5 4
lead in some way to the next as you go around
the circle. The items should represent the parts
of the story or steps to follow.
4. Following the items in the circle, write each step
of the story on a large sheet of paper to display.

A boy wanted to make a birdhouse.

His dad gave the boy a hammer.
Then he needed a nail.
His dad gave the boy some wood.
Then the boy wanted a saw.
He cut the wood and nailed it.
Then he needed some paint.
The boy wanted to put his birdhouse in a tree.
He needed a ladder.
A bird moved into the birdhouse.
More birds came.
“I need to make more birdhouses,” said the boy.
He asked his dad for a hammer.
