POWER PLANT ENGINEERING SET 3
Steam Generator – Boiler (Review Problems)

1. In a dairy plant, milk at 4°C is pasteurized continuously at 72°C at a rate of 12 L/s

for 24h a day and 365 days a year. The milk is heated to the pasteurizing
temperature by hot water heated in a natural-gas-fired boiler that has an efficiency
of 82 percent. The pasteurized milk is then cooled by cold water at 18°C before it
is finally refrigerated back to 4°C. To save energy and money, the plant installs a
regenerator that has an effectiveness of 82 percent. If the cost of natural gas is
$1.10/therm (1 therm = 105,500 kJ), determine how much energy and money the
regenerator will save this company per year.

2. Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal Rankine cycle. Steam enters
the turbine at 3 MPa and 350°C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure
of 10 kPa. Determine (a) the thermal efficiency of this power plant, (b) the thermal
efficiency if steam is superheated to 600°C instead of 350°C, and (c) the thermal
efficiency if the boiler pressure is raised to 15 MPa while the turbine inlet
temperature is maintained at 600°C.

3. Measurement of a cross drum box header boiler are: 4.5 m between headers;
101.6 mm tubes, bank 20 tubes wide, 30 tubes deep; pressure, 15.1 kg/cm2 ab;
0.98 dryness factor; feed, 82.2 C furnace and chimney temperatures 954 C and
296 C. during a 3-hr test on this boiler 5715 kg of 2375 kcal coal were burned,
producing steam at an average rate of 14969 kg per hr. Find (a) the thermal
efficiency; (b) the overall coefficient of heat transfer.

4. Boiler, produces dry saturated steam, is supplied with saturated liquid. 10 kg/s
steam mass flow rate is produced by using 0.5 kg/s oil (lower calorific value of the
fuel is 45 MJ/kg). the flue gas heat less of the furnace is 10%, the combustion
efficiency is 99%.
How much is the heat loss by radiation considering no other losses than the above
mentioned? (heat needed to evaporate 1 kg of steam at his operational point is
1935 KJ)
