06 - Post Structures - Lecture 6

The document describes a grillage structure and its analysis using finite elements. Key points: - A grillage structure is a planar framework of intersecting members subjected to loads normal to the plane. - Each member is modeled as a beam element with axial, bending, torsional degrees of freedom. - Stiffness matrices are derived for each element in local and global coordinate systems using transformed properties. - An example is presented of a 3-member grillage subjected to end forces. Member stiffnesses and the global stiffness matrix are calculated. Loads and displacements are determined by inverting the stiffness matrix.

Grillage Structure

A grillage structure means a set of intersecting

members which all lie in one plane while the
loading is applied normal to that plane.
If the structure lies in X-Y plane, then Mz as
well as Px & Py can be neglected with no
significant error.
The element shall then be subjected to shearing
force Pz, torsional moment Mx and bending
moment My.
