What’s New in the OS

IT requirements are changing. Today’s multi-tenant, mixed-workload environments are more
demanding than ever. New HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 delivers Tier 1 performance and quality of service
(QoS) in a system that is more scalable than ever before to exceed the requirements of the most
demanding hybrid and private cloud environments.
HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 features include the following benefits:
• Assured QoS and resiliency enhancements
• Flash storage optimization
• Increased scalability
• Remote Copy enhancements
• Federated technologies
• New drive support
• Interoperability

6 HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 Service Notes

• Enhanced Thermal Shutdown
• Options for HP 3PAR OS Software Upgrades

Assured QoS and resiliency enhancements

HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage
HP 3PAR Priority Optimization now provides the ability to set minimum goals and maximum limit
for IOPs (that is performance) and bandwidth. You can define Latency Goals for the most
mission-critical applications. To ensure that the latency goals are achieved, the system automatically
adjusts the service levels of lower-priority applications and workloads and ensures that the necessary
QoS levels for highest priority applications are maintained. With the combination of Priority
Optimization and Virtual Domains, you can specify these thresholds to protect individual tenants
and to prevent a single tenant from monopolizing resources. These capabilities allow you to deliver
assured QoS levels without having to physically partition resources or maintain discreet storage
silos thus eliminating any barrier to consolidation.
Virtual Domains eliminate the last barrier to consolidation by integrating with HP 3PAR Priority
Optimization. This enables performance assurance for most mission-critical virtual domains. It is
possible to use Priority Optimization to prioritize not just an application or workload, but also a
virtual domain or a tenant using the multi-tenant system such as different departments, business
units, customers, and so on.
System Reporter allows configuring user-defined alerts directly on a HP 3PAR StoreServ by using
the SR-On-Node data.
New enhanced on-node historical statistic allows the user to monitor:
• Historical data reports for SSD wear gauge
• Historical performance data reports for Remote Copy links
• Historical performance data reports for Remote Copy volumes
Persistent Ports support is extended to iSCSI and FCoE array target connectivity. Persistent Ports
support for Fiber Channel connectivity is enhanced to provide controller node connection status
detection. This provides protection against link loss between the array node port and the SAN
switch. This supports high availability in virtualized environments by automatically failing over a
host facing controller node port that experiences link loss due to a cable or a switch failure.

Flash Storage Optimizations

HP continues to invest and lead in Flash technologies. HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 provides the following
new optimizations:
• Higher IOPS and lower latency for HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 systems with improved handling
of SAS interrupts
• Adaptive Sparing technology implemented with new 480 GB and 920 GB SSDs to enhance
their endurance (available on HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 systems)

Increased Scalability
The increased scalability only applies to HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and 10000 models.

NOTE: New increased scalability numbers do not apply to HP 3PAR F- class and T- class storage
systems.

Enhanced Thermal Shutdown

HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 release is enhanced to shut down an entire system or a single node when
operating thermal limits are reached.

System Shutdown
The system is shutdown when TOC quorum loss is pending for having to spin down too many
drives for over-temperature conditions. The system shutdown includes spin down of all the drives
and shutdown of the nodes. The nodes, the drives, and the drive enclosures are not powered off
as a part of the shutdown. As with previous releases, an individual disk is spun down when it
reaches its thermal operating limit.

Node Shutdown
A single node is shut down when one of the thermal sensors within the node reports a critical
condition. This feature is available on HP StoreServ 7xxx Storage and HP StoreServ 10xxx Storage
systems.

System Turn on
On HP StoreServ 7xxx Storage and HP StoreServ 10xxx Storage systems, after a thermal shutdown
the systems are brought up automatically when the ambient temperature stays below system turn

What’s New in the OS 11

on temperature for 30 minutes. For all other systems, the current procedure for manually turning
on a system is applicable.
Alternatively, when a single node is shut down for thermal reasons, the node is held down
indefinitely and manual intervention is required. The BIOS setting tshutdown (set to value 2 in this
case) must be cleared to start the node again.
When the node is shutdown, the following prompt appears:
SMI Whack>
To clear the tshtudown variable setting, enter the following commands at the whack prompt:
SMI Whack>unset tshutdown
SMI Whack>unset skip_clear_tshutdown
SMI Whack>reset
If the reset command is entered without clearing the tshutdown variable, the following message
is displayed in a loop several times.

to startao which causes startao to exit early. The time when
startao exits might vary depending on the time when LOGFILEMGR
notices that the aomover log file does not exist. As LOGFILEMGR
process ensures that the aomover log file is created, every subsequent
startao works normally. Only the first execution of startao
encounters this issue.
With HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3, this is resolved. It ensures that /var/log/
tpd/aomover exists at the beginning of startao.
The aomover log file is currently not used to report the status of
startao and so it will be always empty. The status of the startao
command is reported via the task manager, or directly to the command
line.

80777 New path management policy is Starting with HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3, a new path management policy
provided for setrcopygroup. can be applied to synchronous remote copy groups. The policy
influences the status of exported volumes of the group. The secondary
volumes are in standby mode and volumes in the primary group are
active. Volumes in groups with no path management are active on
both primary systems and secondary systems. Active volumes are
available for host access; read/write on the primary and read-only
on the secondary. The behavior for Active secondary volumes is the
same as it was on earlier releases for Standby secondary volumes.

The above Logical Disks have chunklets on disks that have a different
connection path from the logical disk ownership. Move the chunklets
listed to disks that have the same connection as the Logical Disk
ownership.
To complete the upgrade, from the SP CLI prompt:
1. Run checkupgrade for progress (for example, the LDs list has
shortened).
2. For each LDs in the list, run showldch to check if chunklet
relocation is in process. If the showldch "Usage" column for a
chunklet shows "relsrc", it indicates that the relocation process is
in progress.
3. Repeat step 1 and 2 till the chunktet relocation process is complete.
4. If this was the last node being upgraded, issue upgradesys
-finish to complete the upgrade process. If it was not the last
node, continue the upgrade process by issuing upgradesys
-auto.
5. Monitor the upgrade status using the upgradesys -status
command. If the same issue is encountered, follow steps 1 through
6 for the newer node.

When this issue is encountered, it causes the whole cluster to go down

events occur simultaneously:
• A node gives error message and goes down.
• During node-up (NUP) lockstep another node is down due to
lockstep time out.
• The lockstep runs quite long due to large number of snapshot
removals happening in the system and might not complete before

StoreServ from version 3.1.3 to an earlier version can result in checkhealth warnings such as
earlier release results in checkhealth Filesystems which are over 80% full and free node disk
warnings and free node disk space space service alerts. For version 3.1.3, the space requirements on
service alerts. the local node drive is increased to the point where previously
monitored thresholds consider it as an issue. For the 3.1.3 release,
the monitoring code is modified with new threshold values to support
this increased usage.
If a StoreServ is subsequently downgraded to an earlier release such
as 3.1.2, the 3.1.3 filesystem is moved to an alternate boot path on
the local node drive while the primary path is installed with the target
version. This allows the StoreServ to be reverted to the 3.1.3 release,
if desired. Because this alternate filesystem is visible to the 3.1.2
monitoring software, the checkhealth warnings (Filesystem is over
80% full) and service alerts (Free node disk space) are triggered.
As a workaround, after the StoreServ is downgraded to the earlier
release, perform an online upgrade to the same release. This replaces
the 3.1.3 alternate filesystem with one that is compatible with the
older disk space monitors thus eliminating the warnings and alerts.

This means:
• From one chunk to the next, the columns can be wider, if the names or values are wider.
• If the output is sorted, it is sorted within each chunk. This means that the VV zzzz, may appear
at the end of the first chunk but not at the end of the last chunk.
The total lines will remain the same.
This is the same as the command setclienv histstatnum. For more information, see the
command setclienv -h.
An option -sortcol is added to some CLI commands. This option provides better reporting
capabilities. With this option, you can get SR historical data sorted by any data column. For
example, you can get SR historical data for the CPU utilization with srstatcpu and sort the data by
increasing utilization, thus showing when the maximum or minimum CPU utilization occurred.

displaying the historical SR data. The lag in obtaining the historical SR
data is reduced by limiting the default begin time of the SR command
(option –btsecs ). The –btsecs default value depends on the begin
time provided and sample category option (-hires, -hourly, -daily) specified.
If begin time is not provided then the time at which the report begins
depends on the sample category option (-hires, -hourly, -daily) specified.
• For hires, the default begin time is 12 hours ago (-btsecs -12h).
• For hourly, the default begin time is 7 days ago (-btsecs -7d).
• For daily, the default begin time is 90 days ago (-btsecs -90d).
If begin time and sample category are not specified then the time at which
the report begins is 12 hours ago and the default sample category is hires.

Support for 1.9TB cMLC

This release of HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 MU1 now supports the 1.9TB cMLC drive.

Retina Scan
The retina scan provides a new class of user to enable Retina Network Security Scanner and
Nessus Vulnerability Scanner to perform a credential, or local, scan of the HP 3PAR OS Linux file
system. Unless a user specifically wants to run a vulnerability scan, they will not be affected at all
by this change.

SSD Wear Level Indicator

SSD Model 3PAR HP part # Capacity(GB)

DOPE1920S5xnNMRI 762770-003 1920

SSD drives have a limited write-life. This means that you can only write to SSD drives a set number
of times before they wear out. The writes for SSD drive DOPE1920S5xnNMRI is allotted one DWPD
(Drive Writes Per Day) over five years, allowing a total of 1,825 writes. A PE cycle (Program Erase)
is when a drive has completed a write on the entire drive. For example, a 1TB SSD drive will have
to have 1TB of data written to it before a single PE cycle is consumed. The factory tests all drives
prior to shipment which consumes some of the write cycles. The counter should drop from 100%
to 99% once 1% of the life has been used. The current algorithm drops 1% on the first PE cycle. This
will be corrected in the next release of the drive firmware.

Modifications to the OS
The following items are addressed in this release:

Issue ID Item Description

99049 A new privilege level is introduced. A new privilege level, Audit, is introduced to the
