Upgrade Considerations
Direct upgrades from HP 3PAR OS 3.1.1 to HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3.202 are not supported with the
initial release of HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3.
Customers running 3.1.1 and wishing to upgrade to 3.1.3 will need to upgrade to the latest 3.1.2
MU prior to upgrading to 3.1.3.
Supported Platforms
The HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 Configuration Matrix contains information about supported hardware and
software platforms. To obtain a copy of this documentation, see the Single Point of Connectivity
Knowledge for HP Storage Products (SPOCK) website at: http://www.hp.com/storage/spock.

Upgrade Considerations 5
Component Version
Increased Scalability
The increased scalability only applies to HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and 10000 models.
NOTE: New increased scalability numbers do not apply to HP 3PAR F- class and T- class storage
systems.
New Drives
New hard disk drives and solid state drives introduced with HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 MU3 Patch 18
are supported with HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3. These include:
• 450 GB and 900 GB 10K FIPS Encrypted SAS HDDs
• 2 TB and 4 TB 7.2K Nearline FIPS Encrypted HDDs
• 480 GB and 920 GB MLC SSDs
Interoperability
Direct Attach Cable Support
With HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3, HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and 10000 Storage supports connectivity
through Direct Attach copper cables. The networking infrastructure that is qualified to work for
direct attach to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage include HP ProCurve and HP 3COM Direct Attach
copper cables and switches.
NOTE: At present, direct attach cables can be used only for iSCSI.
System Shutdown
The system is shutdown when TOC quorum loss is pending for having to spin down too many
drives for over-temperature conditions. The system shutdown includes spin down of all the drives
and shutdown of the nodes. The nodes, the drives, and the drive enclosures are not powered off
as a part of the shutdown. As with previous releases, an individual disk is spun down when it
reaches its thermal operating limit.
Node Shutdown
A single node is shut down when one of the thermal sensors within the node reports a critical
condition. This feature is available on HP StoreServ 7xxx Storage and HP StoreServ 10xxx Storage
systems.
System Turn on
On HP StoreServ 7xxx Storage and HP StoreServ 10xxx Storage systems, after a thermal shutdown
the systems are brought up automatically when the ambient temperature stays below system turn
After the node is at the whack prompt, use the unset command to clear the tshutdown setting and
start the node again.
Customer responsibilities
The Customer will:
• Ensure that the host and SAN environment is supported and compliant with HP
recommendations and best practices.
Modifications to the OS
The following items are addressed in this release.

80777 New path management policy is Starting with HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3, a new path management policy
provided for setrcopygroup. can be applied to synchronous remote copy groups. The policy
influences the status of exported volumes of the group. The secondary
volumes are in standby mode and volumes in the primary group are
active. Volumes in groups with no path management are active on
both primary systems and secondary systems. Active volumes are
available for host access; read/write on the primary and read-only
on the secondary. The behavior for Active secondary volumes is the
same as it was on earlier releases for Standby secondary volumes.

The above Logical Disks have chunklets on disks that have a different
connection path from the logical disk ownership. Move the chunklets
listed to disks that have the same connection as the Logical Disk
ownership.
To complete the upgrade, from the SP CLI prompt:
1. Run checkupgrade for progress (for example, the LDs list has
shortened).
2. For each LDs in the list, run showldch to check if chunklet
relocation is in process. If the showldch "Usage" column for a
chunklet shows "relsrc", it indicates that the relocation process is
in progress.
3. Repeat step 1 and 2 till the chunktet relocation process is complete.
4. If this was the last node being upgraded, issue upgradesys
-finish to complete the upgrade process. If it was not the last
node, continue the upgrade process by issuing upgradesys
-auto.
5. Monitor the upgrade status using the upgradesys -status
command. If the same issue is encountered, follow steps 1 through
6 for the newer node.

restarts these groups instead of setting into failsafe mode. The remote
system eventually fails over the secondary volumes to Primary-Rev
resulting in the LUNs being exports in active / active state for the
volumes in these groups.

snapshot creation/deletion, tune and other activities at the same time.
When this issue is encountered, it causes the whole cluster to go down
resulting in a system outage. This happens when the following three
events occur simultaneously:
• A node gives error message and goes down.
• During node-up (NUP) lockstep another node is down due to
lockstep time out.
• The lockstep runs quite long due to large number of snapshot
removals happening in the system and might not complete before

91250 The following error might appear: When at least one user is already connected to the
maximum number of server connections target array via the WS-API server and a new user
has been reached requests a session key, under certain circumstances
. the WS-API server might display an error maximum
number of server connections has been
reached even though the theoretical number of
sessions is not reached yet.
The workaround is to remove all the sessions
associated with a currently connected WSAPI user
and make room for the requested new session key.
To remove all the sessions associated with a WSAPI
user, use the CLI command: removewsapisession

HBA Firmware:
Drive Firmware
Retina Scan
The retina scan provides a new class of user to enable Retina Network Security Scanner and
Nessus Vulnerability Scanner to perform a credential, or local, scan of the HP 3PAR OS Linux file
system. Unless a user specifically wants to run a vulnerability scan, they will not be affected at all
by this change.
SSD drives have a limited write-life. This means that you can only write to SSD drives a set number
of times before they wear out. The writes for SSD drive DOPE1920S5xnNMRI is allotted one DWPD
(Drive Writes Per Day) over five years, allowing a total of 1,825 writes. A PE cycle (Program Erase)
is when a drive has completed a write on the entire drive. For example, a 1TB SSD drive will have
to have 1TB of data written to it before a single PE cycle is consumed. The factory tests all drives
prior to shipment which consumes some of the write cycles. The counter should drop from 100%
to 99% once 1% of the life has been used. The current algorithm drops 1% on the first PE cycle. This
will be corrected in the next release of the drive firmware.
Modifications to the OS
The following items are addressed in this release:
99049 A new privilege level is introduced. A new privilege level, Audit, is introduced to the
createuser CLI command. This level enables users
to access a secure read-only version of the HP 3PAR
OS file system for security scan purposes.
100128 Error code mismatching when calling HidePaths for When SPM is doing a HidePaths on a non-existent
vLUN. or non-exposed VV from an SPC, the resulting error
message is inaccurate due to a mismatch error code.
This is resolved.
100611/ Reduce the frequency of Quorum Witness In some environments customers might observe a
103891 unreachable alerts. significant number of Quorum Witness unreachable
alerts due to communication failures between HP
3PAR OS and the Quorum Witness Virtual Machine.
Many of these alerts are caused by transient
conditions on the network such as dropped packets,
timeouts due to congestion, and so on. HP 3PAR OS
performs a number of retries before raising the alert.
100472 Clear region move used space during conversions. Online VV conversion transfer LDs from one VV to a
system VV. This makes the region mover maps
pointing to LDVs the user space of the original VV.
In this process, one of the region mover values is not
cleared. This is resolved.
100880 Tunesys tuneld phase can exit unexpectedly. An issue where the tuneld phase of tunesys can exit
unexpectedly. This might happen when AO is moving
a region in an LD and tunesys runs tuneld on the
LD or compactcpg on the related CPG. This is
resolved.
101374 Failure in parsing legacy InstanceID of a HP_3PAR was used as new vendor prefix in SMI-S
TPD_DynamicStoragePool. since OS 3.1.2. The parser function fails to extract
values if the old prefix is used in the CIM request.
Without proper checking, incorrect CPGs are
returned in the first element of query. This is resolved
by adding validations to handle the case.
101447 CPG RAID type is not reported if it is 0. The reply from get CPG operation /api/v1/cpgs
through Web Services API do not contain RAIDType
member if CPG is RAID 1. This is resolved.

VLUNs were allowed to failover. This new capability
can be enabled/disabled using one of these CLI

Modifications to the OS 41
Issue ID Item Description
103504 System now allows greater control when critical When more than half of the disks are missing, the
amounts of disks are missing. system will treat it as a power failure condition and
perform a powerfail save after 3 minutes. Previously,
most commands could be blocked during this period.
The system has been enhanced to permit more to be
done during this time, allowing for the possible
prevention of this powerfail save.
103714 Too many event log messages. In OS 3.1.3 GA you may see too many
ct_mgmt_get_port_info debug event log messages.
This is resolved.
103715 toctool -r was not working after a checkpoint. After a checkpoint due to low quorum or the log
space being near full, toctool -r would not work until
the next log write. This is resolved.
103733 The SNMP Agent stops working with SNMPv3. SNMPAgent was broken due to passing incorrect
argument of data buffer. Using input instead output
buffer causes the failure of AES encoding and
decoding. This is resolved.
104100 MCU version check added to checkhealth node A new check was added to thecheckhealth node
command. command to report when the MCU (NEMOE) code
version is not the same for all nodes.

105184 Host disruptions during peer motion import of large During peer motion import of large volumes (2TB to
volumes. 16TB) host IOs might be blocked for several minutes
(1 to 10 minutes). This can lead to host disruptions
such as host IO failures and host crashes. This is
resolved.
105247 CVE-2014-0160 (Heartbleed) vulnerability may The Heartbleed vulnerability can no longer be
allow unauthorized disclosure of system information. exploited to access system information. No controller
node restart will occur but the Management Console,
Service Processor, and CLI connections may be
disconnected.
105592 System may have difficulty recovering from If all drive cages lose power but the nodes do not,
powerfail save due to powered off disks. the system might encounter issues recovering from
the resulting powerfail save. This is resolved.
105638 Upgrade problems if "auto_failover" not set for Steps to take to avoid the similar issue while
existing Peer Persistence group, for ESX. upgrading to HP OS 3.1.3 with ESX hosts connected.
1. For Peer Persistence groups, set auto_failover for
all primary groups on both arrays by issuing this
command: setrcopygroup pol

105717 netc and rcip configuration error. Onboard ethernet ports function correctly when an
array speed is set.
105992 Tunesys tuneld phase does not detect LDs to tune. An issue where the tuneld phase of tunesys does not
detect LDs to tune. This is resolved.
106428 Async Remote Copy panic. Certain conditions cause Async Remote Copy to
panic. This is resolved.
107047 Reduced mutex contention in remote copy to fix A list data structure was kept internally and the
RCFC sequential write performance issue. system does a periodic check-up on this list with
mutex held. Changes in 3.1.3 GA introduced longer
check-up times, causing severe mutex contention
which caused the performance issue. New changes
in 3.1.3 MU1 were made to reduce contention and
increase performance.
107446 Degraded RCFC initial sync performance. Remote Copy over Fibre Channel Initial sync
performance may be reported as being degraded
as a result of upgrade to OS 3.1.3 GA. In some
customer environments increased latency of
synchronous replication over Fibre Channel may also
be reported.

to fail.
107771 OS 3.1.3 MU1 does not complete successfully. Upgrading from OS 3.1.3 GA to 3.1.3 MU1 will
not complete. The service processor will display that
the upgrade succeeded but it will show that 3.1.3
GA was newly upgraded version. The 3.1.3 GA
Patch 02 must be installed before a true successful
upgrade to MU1 can occur.
107844 Advanced Upgrade falsely prompted. If the PreUpdate Check procedure fails, a prompt to
continue the Advanced Upgrade appears. Do not
continue with the upgrade until the PreUpdate Check
completes successfully.
