EXERCISE 2 TRADEMARK “FLOWERPOWER”
SAEGIS
Your client is planning to launch a new product with the name FLOWERPOWER in the Benelux, France, Germany,
Switzerland and Austria. He/She would like to launch this trademark for class 3.
Note : Make sure EUTM and IR with protection are included as well.
1) First, check if the identical trademark FLOWERPOWER already exists in these countries.
2) Search for all FLOWERPOWER trademarks. Make sure you retrieve such trademarks as FLOWERPOWER
COSMETICS (inactive trademark), KENZO FLOWER POWER, the Power of a Flower by using only one search
strategy.

EXERCISE 3 TRADEMARK “JOHNNY”
THEORY
OPERATORS
Add one of the following operators to the entry field to further tailor your results:

or Search for synonyms or translations by using or. sport or sportt or deporte

Operators must be placed within quotation marks when searched literally, e.g. dead “or” alive.

Select the databases of Benelux, France Germany, Italy, Spain, EUTM and IR only, deselect the Industrial Names.
1) Conduct a search to find out if the identical trademark JOHNNY has been filed.
2) Using one of the operators, how would you perform one search to find trademarks containing at least one of
the following two elements: JOHNNY BRAVO
3) Limit your search by searching in class 18 and 25.
4) How would you search for trademarks containing both of the following 2 elements JOHNNY BRAVO?
5) Have a look at your hit list and create a report for the trademarks you are interested in, export your end report
in a table format.

Plurals are automatically covered. Therefore e.g. sport? will automatically retrieve sports but also sportsy.

in classes 29 30 35 43. The trademark we want to search is EXKI, but we are also interested in the specific
consonant variations ESKI, ECKI, EKI, ENOKI.

EXERCISE 5 TRADEMARK “VITAXSIL”

1) Select the databases of the European Union, EUTM and IR (selected countries only). Do not search the
Industrial Names for the Nordic countries but include all Pharma In Use databases.
2) Your client has developed a new medicine and would like to file the trademark VITAXSIL in classes 3 and 5.
However, he is also interested in knowing whether trademarks like VIAXYL, VITAXOL, VITAXIL, VIDAXIL, etc…
exist. How can you search for all these trademarks using only one strategy? View the results in Trademark

EXERCISE 6 TRADEMARK “CRUNCH”
THEORY
UNLIMITED TRUNCATION * = 0 OR 250 CHARACTERS
You can use the drop down menu (Equals, Begins with, Ends with, Contains) next to the search entry fields to
specify the type of search or you can manually truncate as follows:

Your client is a chocolate manufacturer Cadbury (use class 30).
1) For their new product, your client is interested in all active trademarks with the prefix CRUNCH, however not
crunchie or crunchy.
2) Cadbury though is not interested in retrieving trademarks owned by themselves. How can you exclude these
trademarks?

EXERCISE 7 SEARCHING FOR NUMBER
THEORY
✓ Select Number, Application Number or Registration Number in the list of searchable fields.
✓ Leave out special signs.

1) You wish to obtain a status report for a particular Benelux trademark. The number you have is 621413 but you
are not sure whether this number is the application or registration number. How do you proceed?
2) You require the status reports of the European Union Trademarks with following application numbers:

in only one search query?

EXERCISE 8 TRADEMARK “GOOD DAY”
SAEGIS
Your client would like to file a trademark with the name GOOD DAY in the European Union (do not search in the
Industrial Databases). Limit the search to classes 3, 5 and 35.
1) They first want to check whether the exact trademark GOODDAY or GOOD DAY exists.
How can you search this using one strategy?
✓ How many trademarks are found?
✓ Will you find DAY GOOD with this strategy as well?
2) Use another search strategy to retrieve trademarks like: MORE GOOD HAIR DAY, GOOD FOOD EVERY DAY, FOR
A BETTER DAY AND A GOOD NIGHT.
3) What could you do if you also wanted to find trademarks like FEELGOOD FRIDAYS, GOODSKINDAYS or TODAY
IN A GOOD COMPANY?
Enter this strategy and view your Hit List in the “Trademark Only” format.
4) Select 4 trademarks and create a Full Text report. Go to your SERION Inbox and export the entire report to an
Excel document.

EXERCISE 9: OWNER NAME “KRAFT FOODS”
THEORY
To search for marks owned by a specific owner, select the field Owner Name. Enter only the most distinctive parts
of the owner name. Do not include terms like GmbH, Corp, Ltd.

THEORY
To search for marks filed by a specific filing correspondent, select the field Filing Correspondent. Enter only the
most distinctive parts of the name. Do not include terms like GmbH, Corp, Ltd.

year. Search for all trademarks filed by “a law office of your choice” since 2015.
