Selection Procedure: The size of the coupling should be se-
lected not only on the basis of the horse-
power and speed of the driven unit, but
also on the nature of the load and type
of drive used.
The following factors should be taken into consideration while selecting a suitable coupling:
1) Horsepower to be transmitted. 2) Shaft r.p.m. 3) Service factor. 4) Diameter of the larger of the two shafts to be coupled.
To determine the size of the coupling, first find normal horsepower per r.p.m. and multiply it by service factor. The resultant figure
is the hp rating for selecting a coupling, i.e.
hp rating of coupling = hp to be transmitted/rpm x service factor

If the size of the coupling determined by this equation has a smaller bore than required, then select the appropriate higher size.

Example : A 80 hp electric motor, running at 1000rpm coupled to the ‘Elecon’ Speed Reducer GS-30-109-AO (45:1), input shaft dia 65
mm and output shaft dia 200 mm coupled to a bucket elevator. Output rpm = 22,.
To select couplings for high speed and low speed:
I. HIgh Speed Couplings: hp/rpm = 0.125. However, as the
