1.0 SCOPE
This specification describes the general requirements for a Chemical Injection System. The
requirements outlined herein supplement the Datasheet on which the operating conditions and
special requirements are listed in detail. Where conflicts exist, the Datasheet shall govern.

3.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Packaged Equipment
Each chemical injection system shall be a pre-piped, pre-wired, packaged system. The
Datasheet and the following paragraphs present minimum requirements for the design,
construction, inspection, and testing of the furnished equipment.
3.2 Definitions
A. Packed Plunger Metering Pump is driven by an outside power source which is
applied to a reciprocating plunger in direct contact with the fluid being displaced
and uses a packing to seal leakage past the reciprocating plunger. The pump
drive mechanism shall include facilities for changing the effective plunger
displacement by changing either stroke length or stroke rate.
B. Diaphragm Metering Pump is driven by an outside power source which is
applied to reciprocate a flexible diaphragm in direct contact with the fluid being
displaced. The pump drive mechanism shall include facilities for changing the
effective diaphragm displacement. The diaphragm reciprocation is developed by
either hydraulic actuation or mechanical actuation of the flexible diaphragm.
C. Simplex Metering Pump is a pump having one plunger or diaphragm.
D. Duplex Metering Pump is a pump having two plungers or diaphragms.
E. Triplex Metering Pump is a pump having three plungers or diaphragms.

F. Multiplex Metering Pump is a pump having more than three plungers or
diaphragms.
G. Rated Capacity of a metering pump is the volume of fluid discharged from the
pump at the specified discharge pressure in the indicated time period when
operating at maximum effective stroke length and indicated speeds (in stroke per
unit time or crankshaft revolutions per unit time).
H. Dissolving basket is the primary mixing zone, as an integral part of the chemical
holding tank, to allow premix of the polymer powder prior to its diversion to the
holding tank.
4.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 System Description
A. The chemical injection system shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the
following items:
1. Metering pump(s) and motor(s)
2. Agitator and motor
3. Mixing tank, cover, and dissolving basket (if required)
4. Controls and safety devices
5. System wiring
6. Piping and valving
7. Structural baseplate or skid
B. All equipment and piping shall be so arranged that, when fully installed, all
external and internal parts requiring manipulation, observation, and/or
maintenance shall be readily accessible, and safe to operating and maintenance
personnel. System components shall not extend beyond the skid edge.
C. The following components and work will be provided by the Purchaser:
1. Foundation(s) per Supplier’s skid and tie-down recommendations
2. Installation of equipment
3. Tie-in of all piping and power at system interfaces

4.2 Mechanical Design
A. Positive displacement metering pumps shall meet general requirements of API
Standard 675. Metering pumps shall be diaphragm type. Double ball check
valves shall be used for both suction and discharge. Check valve assembly shall
be removable without removing pump.
B. Pumps shall be rated at 80 percent of the maximum strokes per minute published
by the manufacturer.
C. Metering pumps of the diaphragm type shall be hydraulically operated. Double
valves shall be used for both suction and discharge. Valves shall have removable
seats either screwed in or shouldered.
D. Pumps and drivers shall be suitable for continuous full load duty.
E. Pump repetitive accuracy shall not be less than 98 percent between the range of
10 to 100 percent at the rated capacity.
F. Hydraulically actuated pump diaphragms shall automatically release air from the
actuating hydraulic cavity.
G. No copper or copper-bearing alloys shall be used in wetted parts of the system. It
is preferred that the manufacturer’s standard materials be provided. However, for
certain corrosive services, the liquid pump case material will be indicated on the
datasheet. Other pump parts in contact with the liquid shall be manufacturer’s
standard, and shall be equal to or better than the case material.
H. All bearings shall be isolated from process fluids.
I. Design of the chemical tank shall be such as to prevent escape of liquid with the
lid either closed or open during operation of agitator and pump. When the tank
overall height is more than four feet, access steps with platform shall be provided
to load and inspect the tank. The tank shall have a mounting bracket or other
means for supporting the agitator.
J. The chemical tank shall be mounted on legs, whenever possible, to allow pump
mounting under the tank as well as to allow clearance for drain connections.
K. A dissolving basket shall be provided if specified on Datasheet.

L. Agitator speed and shaft rigidity shall be such as to preclude damage if operating
in an empty tank. Agitator shall be in accordance with requirements of the
Datasheet.
M. Gearing shall be designed for continuous duty per AGMA referenced codes
above and shall be lubricated.
N. The skid or structural base shall be constructed of carbon steel. Structural steel
shall be ASTM A36 or equal.
O. There shall be a sufficient number of adequately sized lifting attachments for
attaching slings to properly handle the skid mounted assembly without removing
assembled equipment.
P. Piping shall be designed, fabricated and tested in accordance with the
requirements of ASME B31.3.
Q. Pipe connections 50.8 mm (2 inches) and larger shall be flanged. Flanges shall
be in accordance with ASME B16.5. Flange bolt holes shall straddle natural
centerline.
R. Use of threaded connections shall be minimized and in no case shall threaded
connections be larger than 38.1 mm (1- 1/2 inches). Pipe threads shall conform
to ASME B1.20.1.
S. All pipes and fittings shall be carbon steel. Cast iron piping materials shall not be
used.
T. Unless otherwise specified, minimum wall thickness for carbon steel piping shall
be Schedule 80 for 50.8 mm (2 inch) nominal and smaller, Schedule 40 for 76.2
mm (3 inches) and larger. Stainless steel and other alloy piping maybe Sch. 40
or Sch. 10 with prior approval of the Purchaser. Nominal pipe sizes of 1-1/4, 2-
1/2, 3-1/2, and 5 inches shall not be used.
U. Screwed and socketweld fittings, including ells, plugs and unions shall be forged
steel with a minimum rating of 3000#. Stainless steel fittings may be 150# rating.
V. System design shall meet applicable seismic and wind forces.
4.3 Instruments, Controls, and Safety Devices
A. The pumps shall have features to permit adjustment of capacity from 10 percent
to 100 percent of the rated capacity while running and shall be supplied with a
percent stroke indicator.

B. The system shall include all specified controls and shall be wired to a local
enclosure. All motor control push buttons shall be furnished by the Supplier. The
controls shall be mounted in an enclosure suitable for area classification
specified on the Datasheet.
C. External relief valves, complete with piping back to supply tank shall be provided.
All relief valves shall be sized so that the system pressure shall not exceed the
pressure relief setting with pump operating at maximum capacity. Relief valve
pressure setting shall be adjustable. Supplier shall provide relief valve
calculations.
D. Suction and/or discharge pulsation dampener shall be provided if stated on the
Datasheet or when deemed necessary by the pump Supplier for proper operation
of the system.
E. Pressure gauges (if applicable) shall have stainless steel bourdon tube and 114
mm (4-1/2 inch) dial face. Pipe connection for pressure gauges shall be 12.7 mm
(1/2 inch) pipe thread. Isolation valves are required between the piping and the
gauge. Diaphragm seals shall be provided when the stainless steel parts of the
gauge is not compatible with the service.
F. When specified, tank gauge glass shall be provided with a scale calibrated in
liters (gallons). The gauge glass shall be shrouded along its entire length to
protect it from mechanical damage. Gauge valves shall be provided to allow
replacement of glass and to preclude loss of product if the glass is damaged. For
non-metallic tanks, a translucent strip covering the length of the tank with a
gallon scale is acceptable.
G. Instruments shall be tagged with numbers assigned by the Purchaser. Unless
otherwise specified, instrument manufacturer/supplier selections are subject to
Purchaser approval.
H. Representation of instrumentation on all submittals shall be in accordance with
ISA 5. I.
I. As a minimum, tank shall be equipped with level instrument (transmitter or
switch) to signal a low level alarm condition.
4.4 Electrical
A. The chemical injection system will be installed in an electrical classified area as
specified on the Datasheet.
B. The chemical injection system shall be designed in accordance with the available
electrical power for the motors, mixers and control systems as specified on the
Datasheet.

C. Supplier shall furnish all specified controls, instruments and devices required for
intended operation of the system.
D. Motor starters for 460 volt motors will be supplied by others; however, if motor
starter is a part of Supplier’s standard package, it shall be supplied as part of the
packaged equipment. Supplier shall clearly state if motor starters are included in
his scope. Single phase motor starters shall be supplied by the Supplier.
E. Supplier shall furnish and install all internal wiring in strict accordance with his
schematics and wiring diagrams. All necessary conduit fittings, terminal blocks,
switchboard wire, cleats, brackets, clamps, and other accessories required for
wiring control panels shall be furnished by the Supplier. Any panel wiring shall be
securely supported and stacked or bundled in a neat, workmanlike manner.
4.5 Electric Motors
A. All motors shall be furnished in accordance with Marafiq Project Specification(s)
for Motors.
B. Horizontal motors used in vertical service shall be equipped with shaft sealing
device or shielding to preclude entry of moisture. Adequate drainage at the lower
end shall also be provided.
4.6 Noise
The system shall not exceed 85 dBA at 1 m (3 ft.). Refer to Marafiq Sound Control
Specification.
4.7 Welding
A. All structural welding shall conform to the requirements of AWS Dl.1/D1.1M. All
pipe welding shall conform to the requirements of ASME B31.3.
B. Welding symbols shall be in accordance with AWS (American Welding Society)
A2.4.
C. Welding terms and definitions shall be in accordance with AWS 3.0.
D. Acceptable welding processes are SMAW (shielded metal-arc welding), GTAW
(gas tungsten welding), and SAW (automatic submerged-arc welding). Other
welding processes require specific written authorization by Purchaser.
E. Filler metal shall be as specified in ASME Code, Section II, Part C. For joints in
similar base metals, the deposited weld metal shall be similar to the nominal
composition and mechanical properties of the base metal.

F. For joints in dissimilar base metals consisting of ferritic (carbon steel) materials
on one side welded to stainless steel (high chrome or nickel) on the other side,
the filler metal shall meet the service requirements. Generally Type 309L filler
metal shall be used. Welding of other dissimilar materials require the Purchaser’s
prior authorization.
G. Electrodes of the following classification are not acceptable for pressure retaining
welds: E6012, E6013, E7014, E6020, E7020, and E7024.
H. Tee or corner joints prepared by thermal cutting shall be ground smooth to
facilitate alignment and proper fit up.
I. Grinding wheels and austenitic stainless steel wire brushes used on austenitic
stainless or other higher nickel and nonferrous alloys shall not have been
previously used on ferrous materials.
J. Pressure containing butt welds shall be full penetration, whether welded from one
side or both sides. Permanent backing strips shall not be used.
4.8 Chemical Storage Tanks
A. Small vertical day/storage tanks shall be Supplier standard construction meeting
weld quality as per ASME Section IX welding practices.
B. Large horizontal bulk storage tanks shall be designed and fabricated following
practices of ASME Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII.
C. Large vertical storage tanks shall be constructed in accordance with API
Standards 650, as applicable.
D. Minimum wall thickness of carbon steel tanks shall be 6.35 mm (1/4 inch).
Corrosion allowance shall be added to this minimum thickness when specified on
the Datasheet.
E. Bulk horizontal tanks shall be supported on saddles and shall have the minimum
of one manway, size 457 mm (18 inches) or larger.
F. Tanks shall be equipped with internal baffles or inlet diffuser pipe to deter
turbulence, if specified on the data sheet.
G. All tanks handling flammable liquids shall be equipped with a venting device that
is normally closed except when venting under pressure or breathing in under
vacuum conditions. All tanks, regardless of fluid handled, must have a vent that
will vent during filling and breathe in during pump out without exceeding the tank
minimum and maximum design pressures. If required, tanks shall be equipped
with flame arrestors.

H. Lined tanks shall each be stenciled on the exterior sidewalls with a warning sign
painted in bright red over white background to read as follows:
“LINED TANK - DO NOT WELD ON TANK OR CONNECTING PIPE”
The stencil shall be applied to a least three points around the circumference of
vertical vessels, and particularly on the large diameter vessels, apply the stencil
at points within the field of view of one another when viewed from 1.83m (6 feet)
away.
4.9 Painting
A. Stainless steel surfaces will not be painted. All shop fabricated carbon steel
exposed surfaces shall be shop primed and finish painted.
B. Unless specified otherwise, surface preparation and painting shall be as follows:
Surfaces to be painted shall be cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP1O “Near
White Metal Blast Cleaning.” Surface preparation shall be followed by application
of one coat of inorganic zinc rich primer to a dry film thickness of 3 to 5 mils. The
primed surfaces shall be finish painted with one coat of polyamide epoxy to a dry
film thickness of 3 to 5 mils.
C. Surface preparation, priming and finish painting of the following items shall be in
accordance with Supplier’s standard painting specification:

4.10 Lubrication
Supplier shall identify the lubrication requirements for initial start-up and one year of
continuous operation of the equipment. Lubrication data is required to ensure that the
required lubricants are procured and are at the jobsite when needed. Lubrication data
shall be submitted in accordance with Lubrication Datasheet.
4.11 Spare Parts
Supplier shall provide a unit priced list of recommended spare parts for start-up and
commissioning and one year operation. Spare parts information shall be submitted as
required on the Supplier Drawing and Data Commitment form.
4.12 Performance Guarantee
Supplier shall guarantee performance of the chemical injection system in all respects to
the conditions described in this Specification and on the Datasheet. It shall be able to

deliver quantity of chemical within specified range of flow, at the specified pressure
without any operational interruptions.
5.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING
5.1 Inspection
A. Supplier shall furnish the Purchaser copies of the Supplier’s inspection and
quality control plan. Hold points and witness points shall be agreed to.
B. Materials and workmanship shall be subject to inspection by the Purchaser in the
Supplier’s shop.
C. The Purchaser’s inspector will check, as a minimum, equipment components,
tagging, critical dimensions, connection sizes and locations, and quality of
workmanship against certified drawings, data, and purchase order documents.
5.2 Testing
A. The assembled chemical injection system shall be functionally tested to ensure
the proper operation of all components in the system.
B. Piping subject to pressure shall be hydrostatically tested at 1 .5 times the
maximum allowable working pressure for not less than 10 minutes. The vented
mixing tank and suction line to the pump will be inspected for leaks with the tank
filled to its maximum capacity.
C. Each pressure casing shall be hydrostatically tested at 1.5 times the maximum
allowable casing working pressure or 7.93 barg (115 psig), whichever is greater.
D. Equipment and piping shall be clean and free of debris, sand, rust, dust, etc.
before hydrostatic testing. Fresh water shall be used, unless otherwise approved
by the Purchaser. Metal and water temperature shall not exceed 48.9 degrees C
(120 degrees F) during testing. For equipment or piping containing any austenitic
stainless steel components, test with potable water with less than 200 ppm
chlorides. Immediately drain and dry equipment and piping upon completion of
test.
E. Metering pumps shall be separately shop tested to verify ability to pump specified
capacity at maximum discharge pressure.

6.0 DOCUMENTATION
Supplier shall supply the type and quantity of drawings and documentation for Purchaser’s
authorization or information as listed on the Supplier’s Drawing and Data Commitment form.
Drawing Identification
A. Each drawing shall be provided with a title block in the bottom right-hand corner
incorporating:
1. Official trade name of the company
2. Supplier’s drawing number
3. Drawing title shall match the description title on the SDDC form and give the
description of contents whereby the drawing can be identified
4. A symbol or letter indicating the latest issue or revision
5. Purchaser’s order number and item tag number
B. Revisions to drawings shall be identified with symbols adjacent to the alterations, a brief
description in tabular form of each revision shall be given, and, if applicable, the authority
and date of the revision shall be listed. The term “Latest Revision” shall not be used.
7.0 PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT
Supplier shall be solely responsible for providing adequate preparation for shipment. Preparation
will be subject to inspection and rejection by the Purchaser’s inspector. Minimum preparation for
shipment shall be as described in the following paragraphs.
7.1 Adequate protection shall be provided against mechanical damage and atmospheric
corrosion in transit, and for at least six months outdoor storage at jobsite prior to
installation.
7.2 Shipping saddles, bracing, supports, and rigging connections shall be provided to prevent
damage during shipment, lifting, or unloading.
7.3 Flange faces, other than those furnished with permanent blinds, shall be covered with
12.7 mm (1/2 inch) thick wood, wood fiber, 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) thick steel plate, or heavy
duty plastic flange protectors. Covers shall be no smaller than the flange O.D., and
secured with a minimum of four bolts. Where wood, wood fiber, or metal covers are used,
a plastic sheet shall be placed between the coated flange and cover for additional
protection.

7.4 Female threaded connections shall be plugged with solid metal pipe plugs, and male
threaded connections shall be protected with full metal pipe caps of the same material as
the piping.
7.5 Exposed unpainted surfaces, including bolting, shall be given a heavy coating of rust
inhibiting compound.
7.6 Separate, loose, and spare parts shall be completely boxed. All pieces of equipment and
spare parts shall be identified by item number and service and marked with Purchaser’s
order number, item number, and weight both inside and outside of each individual
package or container. A packing list must be sent to Purchaser prior to shipment.
7.7 One complete set of installation, operation, and maintenance instructions specific to the
equipment being furnished shall be packed in the boxes or crates and shipped with the
equipment.
7.8 Equipment tagging and marking shall conform to the following requirements:
A. All equipment shall be piece marked and electrical terminals shall be coded to
facilitate field erection.
B. Instruments shall be tagged with the instrument tag numbers as identified by the
Purchaser on Supplier’s drawings.
C. In addition to the Supplier’s standard identification, tags shall be furnished to
show the service, Purchaser’s item number, and Purchaser’s order number for
each tag item listed on the Purchase Order.
D. Instrument and equipment tags shall be impression stamped stainless steel with
4.76 mm (3/16 inch) (minimum) characters and permanently mounted with
stainless steel drive screws or 16 gauge wire (minimum).
E. Interconnecting piping that will be shipped loose shall be prefabricated and shop
fitted. All such piping shall be match marked prior to dismantling and shipment.
