Vernier Caliper
1.0 Scope
2.1 Gauge Block Set with a valid certificate of calibration either traceable to international or
national standard laboratory in accordance with an industrial code or a regulation shall
be used as a standard for calibration.
2.2 The standards for calibration shall be kept under controlled environmental conditions e.g.
dust free environment and Lab. temperature 22°C ± 3°C.Lab Humidity 60%RH±20% RH.
3.1 The details of Vernier Caliper received for calibration shall be entered in the Calibration
Job Form (Form: Call/001).
3.2 It shall be ensured that the Vernier Caliper measuring surfaces are free of dirt, nicks and
burrs. The Vernier Caliper can be adjusted through its entire range with no signs of
sticking or binding.
3.3 The Vernier Caliper shall be inspected and marked () in relevant block of equipment’s
primary inspection section of Calibration Data Sheet (Form: Call/013).
4.1 On dial calipers the side marked out side should read zero with jaws closed and meter
set on zero before starting calibration.
4.2 The Vernier Caliper to be calibrated shall be maintained at same place of standard
(Gauge Block Set) for 24 hours minimum.
4.3 The side of the Vernier Caliper marked “ out side “ should read zero with jaws closed and
the back or side marked “inside “ should read approximately the Nib width when jaws are
closed.
4.4 The Vernier Caliper shall be checked with appropriate size gauge block or blocks, at
approximately 20, 40, 60 and 80 % of full range.
4.5 The gauge blocks shall be placed on working surface with both ends or working surfaces
exposed.

4.6 The inside of Vernier Caliper jaws shall be placed over the ends or working surfaces of
gauge block making a rough setting and screw shall be tightened on fine adjustment
clamp.
4.7 The final adjustment shall be made with knurled nut bringing jaws into contact with the
ends of gauge blocks making sure that jaws are set properly. The reading of out side
measurement should be the same as the total length of the gauge blocks.
4.8 The inside calibration is similar to the out side check except the jaws of the Vernier
Caliper are set to the inside of the Gauge Block caliper jaws and the measurements or
setting read from the back of side marked “inside” The reading should be the total length
of the Gauge Blocks between the caliper jaws.
4.9 Parallel jaws check shall be performed by closing jaws and checking for light wedge.
4.10 2mm gauge block at nib end of throat place shall be placed and reading shall be taken.
4.11 2mm gauge block shall be placed to the other end of caliper throat and reading shall be
taken.
4.12 The relevant section of Calibration Data Sheet (Form: Call/013) shall be marked.
4.13 The readings of Vernier Caliper shall be recorded in observed value column against the
standard readings in set value column of Calibration Data Sheet (Form: Call/013).
4.14 The Vernier Caliper shall be adjusted to zero and the equipment be secured.
4.15 The Vernier Caliper shall be cleaned and lubricated if required.
4.16 Calibration Certificate (Form: Call/002) shall be issued for calibrated Vernier Caliper as
per Calibration Data Sheet Record (Form: Call/013).
4.17 A Calibration Sticker (Form: Call/003) containing following information shall be affixed
on the calibrated Vernier Caliper.
a) Item code
b) Calibrated on
c) Next calibration date
All the latest formats are documented in Master List of Document / Record and placed in CQF
