Form 5 Physics Test On Fluid Questions

This document contains a physics examination on fluid mechanics for Form Five students at the Mudio Islamic Seminary in 2019. It includes 4 questions covering various fluid mechanics concepts: 1) Questions about calculating the viscosity of motor oil using Stokes' law, comparing the flow rates and viscosities of water and alcohol in a capillary tube, and calculating the viscosity of oil from the force and velocity of a plate moving through the oil. 2) Questions involving drag forces proportional to velocity squared and calculating a proportionality constant from terminal velocity data. 3) Questions about Bernoulli's equation, continuity equation, calculating jet velocity from an orifice, and estimating wingbeat velocity of a bat. 4) Questions defining

FORM FIVE EXAMINATION (TEST ON FLUID) –2019
PHYSICS – 1

Time 2:00 HRS 4TH/02/2019

1. (a) In an experiment to determine the coefficient of viscosity of motor oil the following
Meas urements were made, mass of glass sphere mg = 1.2 x 10-4kg, Diameter of sphere
ds = 4 x 10-3m. Terminal velocity of sphere vt = 5.9 x 10-2 m/s. density of oil
ʃo = 860kg m-3, calculate the coefficient of viscosity of oil.

(b) A constant head apparatus causes liquid to flow through capillary tube with water in the
apparatus, the flow is 30cm3 min-1 but with alcohol flow is 20cm3 min-1. If viscosity of
water is 1.0 x 10-3 Nm-1S-1. What is viscosity of alcohol?

(c) An oil film of area 100cm2 and uniform thickness 1.0mm separating two flat metal
horizontal metal plates. The lower plate is fixed and horizontal force of 0.15N acting on
the upper plate gives uniform velocity of 6.0cmS-1. What is viscosity of oil?

2. (a) A body moving through air at high speed V experience retarding force F given by
F = Kaʃvx where A is a surface area and ʃ is density of air. Deduce the value of x.

(b) A sphere of radius 50mm and mass of 1.0kg falling vertically through air of density
1.2kgm-3 attain a steady velocity of 11.0m/s. find the value of k where k is constant.

3. (i) State Bernoulli’s Equation and the equation of continuity.

(ii) A cylindrical tank of diameter 90cm rests on top of platform 6cm high. Initially the
tank is filled with water to a depth of 3cm plug whose area is 3cm2 is remained form
the orifice on the side of the tank at the bottom.
(a) What is speed will water strike the ground?
(b) How long will it take to be empty?
(c) A bat of mass 1100g havers upwards by beating its wings of effective area
0.4cm2. estimate the velocity impact to the air by the beating of the wing.
Assuming air to be at S.T.P weather condition.
4. (a) (i) What is meant by viscous drag?
(ii) With the Aid of dimensional analysis derive expression relating viscous drag
leading to stokes law.

(b) (i) Compare the time taken by two small spheres of the same height through a liquid after
reaching their terminal velocity. The diameter of one sphere is three times of that of
the other.
(ii) Deduce the terminal velocity of an oil drop of radius 3.0 x10-6m falling through
air neglect density of air and take
air = 1.8 x 10-5Pa.
ʃoil = 8.0 x 102kgm-3

(c) A tank filled with water to height H, A small hole is punched at a depth h below the water
surface show that distance x from the base of the tank to the point at which the resulting
ground is given by x=2 √ h(H−h)
