Thesis Statement
• Function: To show / put forward your motive / purpose of the
essay.
• Written as the last sentence in the INTRODUCTION
PARAGRAPH
• Outlines all arguments / ideas in the essay
• Grammar Focus: Thesis statement should maintain a parallel
structure
Thesis Statement
• Requires THREE (3) elements:
• Topic
• Controlling idea
• Three supporting ideas
• Should be written in PARALLEL STRUCTURE and SHOULD NOT BE A
SIMPLE SENTENCE.
• Example: Should robots replace human professions in future?

• “Robots should not replace human jobs in future anytime in future as


it can increase the unemployment rate, threaten the economy and
induce social problems”.
Thesis Statement Examples
• Describe the characteristics of a good computer.
“A good computer should have the latest graphic card and the latest processor so
it can support high-end gaming”
• What are the effects of water pollution on ocean life?
“The effects of water pollution on ocean life are destruction of the aquatic
ecosystem and extinction of coral reef which leads to extinction of sea
creatures.”

1. Parallel sentences ensure there are no misinterpreted ideas in your
sentence.
2. Ideas will be expressed in a more organized manner.
Parallel Structure – Word Level

ord level:
• Princess Diana was a beautiful, generous and influential figure in the
monarchy.
• Beautiful, generous and influential are adjectives
• The article /A/ is not repeated as it is applied to Princess Diana (singular)
• Bambi sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to ensure his success.
• Blood, sweat and tears are nouns.
• The word /sacrificed/ is not repeated as it is applied to all three nouns.
Parallel Structure – Phrase Level

• Phrase level:
• The carpenter designed the framework, prepared the materials and arranged the manpower
to design the beautiful house.
• The verb-object phrase is parallel to the Simple Past form
• The causes of truancy among students are the lack of discipline at home and major influence
of friends which effect the students performance in education.
• The first TWO ideas (Red) are consistent and parallel with the main noun (Causes)
• The final idea (Blue) is parallel and consistent with the second noun (truancy)
• The structure for all three ideas are parallel (Subject – Verb – Object)
Paragraph Writing and Development
• Contains THREE (3) important areas:
• Topic Sentence
• Supporting Details
• Concluding Statement
• Topic Sentence: show purpose / objective of the paragraph.
• Supporting Details: provide explanation / examples to support the topic
discussed
• Concluding statement: a general summary / prediction / opinion based on
arguments / ideas in the paragraph
