The Ohio State University Concert Bands
and
Symphony Orchestra Winds
Audition Instructions
Autumn 2015
1. These auditions are required for membership in the Wind Symphony, Symphonic
Band, Collegiate Winds and Symphony Orchestra. University Band does not
require an audition for membership. Visit our website (bands.osu.edu) for
information regarding membership in the University Band. Auditions are open
to all students enrolled at The Ohio State University, regardless of major.
2. The audition sign up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board outside the stage
door to Weigel Auditorium. This is located on the first floor of Weigel Hall, 1866
College Road. You may sign up for an audition time beginning August 10.
3. If you cannot audition during the assigned time for your instrument, please
contact Tom Cook (cook.24@osu.edu) to request an alternate audition time.
4. Please prepare the material in this packet. Each packet should include the
following:
a. a page of “Compulsories” for your instrument.
b. Lyrical Etude (Please use your own dynamic and appropriate musical
expression. We have removed all written expression markings)
c. Etude excerpts
d. Some studios will have additional requirements, such as orchestral
excerpts.
e. If you are a flutist wanting to audition for Piccolo, please prepare the
piccolo excerpt in addition to the flute material.
f. Bass Clarinet and Tenor Saxophone music is included in the Clarinet and
Saxophone packets respectively. These materials are ONLY for non-
majors wishing to play in Collegiate Winds. All clarinet or saxophone
majors, as well as non-majors wishing to be considered for Symphonic
Band and Wind Symphony, should play soprano clarinet or alto
saxophone.
5. In addition to the prepared materials, you will be asked to sight-read.
6. The audition committee may stop you at any point in the audition should they
feel they have heard enough to make an appropriate ensemble placement. Please
do not be offended. This simply streamlines the process of hearing several
hundred auditions in five days.
We look forward to hearing your audition. If you have read this document and have
additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tom Cook (cook.24@osu.edu).
If he cannot answer your question, he will ask one of the conductors or studio
teachers, and we will get back to you promptly.
