3.0 Butterfly Valve Chamber Precast Panel Design

The document discusses the design of a precast panel for a butterfly valve chamber. Key parameters include a maximum span of 2100mm, concrete grade of M15, reinforcement grade of Fe500, and live load of 2kN/m2. Self-weight and live load are calculated, with total UDL of 2.54kN/m. The panel is designed for two cases: placed condition with maximum bending moment of 1.4kNm, and lifting condition with maximum moments of 0.0709kNm and -0.37kNm. Reinforcement requirements are calculated and 3 bars of 10mm diameter rebar are sufficient.

Design of Precast Panel for Butterfly Valve Chamber

A. DATA :
Maximum span for Butterfly Valve Chamber Precast Panel = 2100 mm

Concrete Grade = M15

Reinf. Grade = Fe 500
Live Load = 2 kN/m2
Concrete Density gc = 25 kN/m3

B. DESIGN :

L= 2.1 m
Thickness t = 0.15 m
Width of Panel W = 0.3 m

UDL due to self-wt = 1.4 x gc x W x t ……Factor for DL is 1.4

w sw= 1.58 kN/m

UDL due to LL = 1.6 x LL x W

w LL= 0.96 kN/m ……Factor for LL is 1.6

Total UDL = w = 2.54 kN/m

The precast panel will be designed for 2 cases,

1. Placed condition
2. Lifting condition

1. Placed conditon:

w. L2
Max. BM =
8

= 1.40 kN.m
2. Lifting Case:
R1 R2

Consider Lifting hook 300mm from panel edge.

Self-wt UDL = 1.58 kN/m
R1 = R2 = w sw. L 1.65 kN
=
2
M @ R1 = w sw X 0.3 x 0.3 / 2 …(wL2/2)

= 0.0709 kN.m

2
M @ mid = (w sw X (L/2) /2) - ( R1 x (L/2 -0.3))

= 0.8682 - 1.24

= -0.37 kN.m

0.071 0.071

-0.37 kN.m

BMD for Lifting Case

So, it is clear from the above calculations that the inplaced condition will govern the design.

So design the panel for moment of 1.4 kN.m
