Animal Testing and Research in The Name of "The Greater Good". Where Do We Draw The Line?

Animal testing violates animals' rights and causes them pain and suffering. While some argue animal testing provides medical benefits, the quality of animals' lives is not considered and they are virtually tortured. Alternative testing methods exist that do not require harming sentient beings. Overall, animal testing should be eliminated because it cannot be justified to torture and kill thousands of animals annually merely for human benefit or convenience.

Animal testing and research in the name of "the greater good".

Where do we
draw the line?
Right now there are thousands of animals in the world that are being confined,
abused and mistreated by various companies who use them as test subjects. I
strongly believe, that animal’s rights are violated when they are used in research.
The pain and suffering that experimental animals are subject to is not worth any
possible benefits to humans.
In the first place, many people believe that animal testing is justified because the
animals are sacrificed to make products safer for human use and consumption. The
problem with this reasoning is that the animals' safety, well-being, and quality of
life is generally not a consideration. Experimental animals are virtually tortured to
death, and all of these tests are done in the interest of human welfare, without any
thought to how the animals are treated. I know curious article, which named "Is
Your Experiment Really Necessary?" In this article Sheila Silcock claims:
"Animals may themselves be the beneficiaries of animal experiments. But the
value we place on the quality of their lives is determined by their perceived value
to humans". Making human's lives better should not be justification for torturing
and exploiting animals. The value that humans place on their own lives should be
extended to the lives of animals as well.
Secondly, many researchers can argue that they test animals for the greater good of
society such as helping people conquer addiction, curing diseases and
understanding the effects of mental disorders. The issue with trying to give animals
rights when being tested on is that if researchers don’t take the risk of inflicting
damage onto an animal in their experiments, society can be eroded of vital
information. The research animal testing provides such as in the medical industry
can be world-changing which can be worth risking the lives of a few or even
hundreds of animals, as it can result in saving millions of lives, both human and
animal. Animal testing has and is still needed to develop and create a stable
society, but that doesn’t mean it should not have its limits.
In conclusion, animal testing should be eliminated because it violates animals'
rights, it causes pain and suffering to the experimental animals, and other means of
testing product toxicity are available. Humans cannot justify making life better for
themselves by randomly torturing and executing thousands of animals per year to
perform laboratory experiments or to test products. Animals should be treated with
respect and dignity, and this right to decent treatment is not upheld when animals
are exploited for selfish human gain.
