Spoken English Classes

As a part of your volunteering activity you can start Weekly Spoken English classes in your locality for the
students and their parents who are interested to improve and brush up their English speaking skills or
pronunciation.

How to start:

1. Form a group of 2-3 volunteers so that you can ensure continuity and also group synergy.
2. Identify interested people in your area. A primary survey (a one to one talk) about your idea, with
groups of people will help you identify students.
3. Fix timings and dates as per your convenience and intimidate the students about the same.
4. Identify a convenient place to conduct the classes. It could be in a local school (after school hours)
or at a residence, if it is convenient.
5. On the very first class ask the students to fill up the form. You can teach them to fill up form
properly in English (that itself can be the topic of the day’s class). Also maintain an attendance
sheet.
6. Select the basics to start with, depending on the age group and receptive ability of the students.
The various modules for sessions can be emailed to you or you can use local resources/text books.
Remember to have spoken English as the main objective, do not stress more on grammar.
7. Make the classes interesting. Have role plays and team games to ensure better understanding on
the part of the students. The students must be made to speak in English so that the hesitation is
removed.
8. After every class, conduct a revision of the lessons done so far.
9. Encourage the students to perform better and motivate them to improve on the language.

10. Interact with the students on why being a good speaker is necessary. Ask what makes them feel
interested in the Spoken English sessions. Likewise you will be able to cater to their needs and
weaknesses.
11. Try out different ways to teach- have video sessions, storytelling activity, games etc.
12. Assign homework. That will make them practice better.
13. After a month or so, you can ask them to share their experiences and let them speak about if they
have felt a difference/improvement in themselves and also how learning the language helps them
in their everyday life.
14. Make it a point to have even informal conversations in English. This will help them perfect their
speaking skills.
15. Make the students interact amongst themselves and help out each other with the language. This
will help you have a cordial ambience in the classroom.
