El Filibusterismo was known as “The Reign of Greed”. It was a sequel of his first book
Noli Me Tangere. El Filibusterismo is a dedication to the three martyred priests Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, expressing conviction that their treatment and
deaths at the hands of the Spanish authorities were unjust.
It consists of 38 chapthers. Rizal started writing El Filibusterismo on October 1887 while
he was in Calamba and he continued it in London in 1888. Rizal finished his novel on March
29, 1891 while he was in Biarritz. It took 3 Years to complete the novel. On September 18,
1891, El Filibusterismo was published in Ghent. Partially funded by Rizal’s friend Valentine
Ventura.
